Sustainability: (Task 1)
Diary contribution in sustainable goals is recognized in 2016 diary declaration of Rotterdam, a
joint declaration of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Diary
Federation (IDF) to which Fonterra belongs. The corporation has owned about 10,500 farming
families that essentially needs water and maintaining the waterways is sufficiently necessary. A
pledge had been signed by Fonterra with various agriculture organizations to make the effective
use of the agriculture lands to 80 percent, which commits an ambitious goal of utilizing the New
Zealand’s river for their future generation. Natural resources are very essential since a healthy
environment could create a strong economy (Aryal et al, 2016). The main goal of the Fonterra is
to have a globally competitive diary industry with the flourishing environment and blooming
economy.
The waterways of New Zealand depend on the people impact that has maximum impact with the
buildings and living cities. This tends to use the rural lands for the food, fiber and creation of
energy. The search of land and water has been increased due to the intensification of land
(Chandran and Surendran, 2016). Farming has an effect for the water quality based on the four
ways: 1) bacteria 2) sediments 3) water use and 4) nutrients.
Maintaining the economy, Fonterra offers best dairy products across the world by providing a
good return to the farmers and their families. The need to balance the social and the economic
considerations is done by the sustainable co-operation by distributing the products sensibly and
competitively. The healthy and the clean foods should be offered to the consumers at a
reasonable cost with the effective food production. The value chain is essential and there are
three principle sustainable priorities to maintain the sufficient condition. The global issues linked
with the nutrition should be addressed with the growing population. This could improve the New
Zealand water quality and play with the effective climate change that contributes to the
maximum impact. The development of new technology for maintaining the quality of water is
also encouraged without giving up the quality factor.
SWOT analysis:
For undergoing the process of waste water management it is necessary to do the SWOT analysis
that stands for the Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and threats. Hence the goal of the Fonterra
should be analysed with the challenges faced by them that has been stated below:
Challenges: (Task 3)
Water is the main dependent factor of Fonterra that is used to clean the plants. Through this, high
quality with the food safety standards could be achieved that helps with the consumers and
customers to be satisfied with the diary products. The water should be effectively used among
the 26 sites that lead to the sufficient management of waste water. This water could be
effectively used for the factory and it could also be used for the purpose of irrigation. In certain

cases the water could be treated properly and fed back to the river or the ocean. Regional
councils permit for certain actions to be carried out from the towns and the cities.
Main Goal: The ultimate goal of the Fonterra in waste water management is to reduce the usage
of water for treating the plants in cleaning and cooling purposes. This could effectively reduce
the volume of production of waste water that is sufficiently treated and managed. The quality of
the management could be improved that sufficiently meets the industry standards with the
maintenance of ambient environment (Gathala et al, 2016). By the year of 2020, Fonterra could
minimize the utilization of water in their 26 manufacturing sites by recycling the waste water
produced. Moreover, they also tend to invest $250 million for the next nine years to improve the
standards of the industry with the other chief industries by effectively discharging the waste
water. This could exceed the regulatory standards of waste water quality.
The irrigation practices carried out has been altered by best management practices in their farms
that could leads to the effective nutrient management (Dekker, 2015). The catchment wide
learning has been shared by gaining the DOC – Living water partnership. For getting the healthy
fresh water, the company tends to work with the local communities and the regional council in
order to build up the action plan for 50 water catchments. With the help of GIS mapping, the
land is selected that could support the best cultivation based on the plant type on each catchment.
This is known as riparian planting (FAO, 2016). They also aim in working with the wetlands that
could be used as a landscape to support the quality water and wildlife.
