ESSAY
Sustainable and responsible tourism are the new practices that are used by businesses
working in hospitality industry aiming towards mitigating the historical negative impacts and
effects imposed by tourism practices towards the environment and to the global stability.
Sustainable tourism and responsible tourism are two different terms and cannot be used
interchangeably. These are two parallel concepts having similar mission with different
implementation techniques. Sustainable tourism aims to make positive economic, social and
environmental impact of the tourism practices and activities conducted in the host destination.
On the other hand responsible tourism depends on individual actors that is it refers to the ways
visitor’s, residence and small businesses involved in the tourism activity communicates with the
destination. The term sustainable management and responsible management in tourism clearly
relates with two different aspects and depends upon separate factors (Edgell, 2019). Sustainable
management in tourism refers to adopting appropriate practices in order to provide positive
impact on the host to destination. On the other hand, responsible management in tourism refers
to undertaking a systematic and critical approach by visitors and other related parties of tourism
industry within the destination. The report will be aiming towards understanding a clear
difference between sustainable and responsible tourism in regards to a respective destination and
tourism hospitality organisations. Along with it the essay will also be discussing sustainable and
responsible management practices, policies, principles and procedures which are implemented in
respective destinations and adopted by tourism organisations in the most feasible and reliable
manner.
According to the views of Fram. A. (2016), both the terms that are sustainable tourism
and responsible tourism are different from one another holding separate goals, conducting
different activities and looking over separate concepts. Sustainable management of tourism is
defined as unique impact tourism industry is aiming to impose on the host destination in respect
to sociological, economical and environmental notion. The practice of sustainable management
of tourism sector of a particular destination depends upon the actions of stakeholders and
political leaders who are working in the hospitality industry and for making improvements by
using fair policies of redistributing profits, alleviating poverty, developing and implementing
new social protection acts and measurements introducing stable environment. In simple terms

sustainable management of tourism is an integral part of the hospitality industry and needs to be
continued as a practice of the business sector.
Responsible management of tourism it differs from sustainable management practices in
the sector where the dependency is upon the indivisible actors or the participants in the tourism
sector. The major stakeholders who are concerned with responsible management of tourism are
the small and large businesses involved in tourism industry, the visitors visiting the respective
destination and the local residents. The notion of responsible management of tourism refers to
the unique and variant ways in which all the stakeholders interact with one another and link
themselves to the respective destinations. This relates to make responsible choices for fostering a
positive interaction among them with the host destination and the tourism sector of it (Mathew
and Sreejesh, 2017).
In very simple terms both sustainable management of tourism and responsible
management of tourism are aligned with one another and works correspondently where the first
approach look towards tourism industry at macro level on the other hand the second aspect takes
up the view towards the destination and tourism approaches at micro level. The sustainability
practices of tourism industry depends upon the treatment taking place for betterment of the entire
destination on the other hand the tourism practices which are responsible in nature are adopted
by the organisations and the other stakeholders related with the tourism activities and bring
strategies towards the organisational in its practices and performances.

tourism development and Management practices are applicable to all form of tourism
destinations, mass tourism and other niche tourism segments (Higgins-Desbiolles, 2018). There
are different sustainable principles referring to Macro cultural aspect of tourism management and
development in order to establish a suitable balance in all the three dimensions of macro cultural
components and guaranteeing the long-term sustainability of the attractive tourism locations of
the host destinations. These sustainable principles of tourism are as follows:
Optimum utilisation of environmental resources, this is a Major principle which
constitute critical factor in tourism development, maintaining an ecological balance and process
in the industry and enabling the destination to conserve the natural Heritage and biodiversity. For
example according to the United Nations development programme inclusive growth programme
developed a policy ensure that the tourism sector of the area meets the needs of local
