INTRODUCTION
Logistics management in the construction industry refers to the process of planning
implementing controlling supply chain resources generally form the point of origin such as raw
material accumulation put a point of destiny suggest delivering goods to the accurate location or
construction site (Chamikara, Perera and Rodrigo, 2020). Logistics management please an
important role in improving bottom line in the construction industry and enhances efficiency and
productivity of the overall construction project. This report focuses on sustainable construction
and logistics sources in context of a project of constructing a shopping building. The potential
issues which can affect costs and time scale of the construction project are discussed in this
report along with different types of renewable energy or sustainable sources which can be used
for completing the project. Supply chain management and procurement of material resources for
the project are also described in this report. The principle of health and safety factors which need
to be considered for the project in production phase and identified and risks associated are
explained. passive or active system for this project and design phase is also discussed in this
report.
Overview of the shopping centre construction project
The construction project for this report is of a four thirty million pounds building
project located in east London at the back of Docklands campus. the project is to build a new
shopping centre under the time period of 36 months with the focus on minimising negative
environmental impact of the construction project.

The external environment of a project can create issues in timely completion
and optimal usage of finances in constructing a building. Construction industry is considered to
be one of the primary sources of environmental pollution which showcases that there are
different environmental issues which can affect the construction of shopping centre in the present
project. There are both direct and indirect impacts of construction on environment (Coppola et.
al., 2018). Construction impacts fragile environment because of the adverse aspects associated
with construction activities such as building a shopping centre. The environmental impacts

include natural resource depletion, loss of biological diversity, adverse human health due to
poor indoor air quality and noise pollution caused because of construction activities. In context
of the project of building a shopping centre the primary issues which can affect
the timely completion of the construction project related to sustainability are Land depletion
and it was impact of construction on employees. These issues can lead to accidents and health
problems on the construction site along with disturbing continuous completion of the
construction project. It is important to consider these environmental issues during the
construction of the shopping centre in order to ensure that night resources are negatively
affected work in a safe environment (Di Maria and et. al., 2020). This will
support timely completion of the project.
The primary economic factors which affected construction activities include tariff trade conflicts
inflation under eyes of cost of construction materials. In case of the project of building a
shopping centre the rising cost of hiring construction employees. The shortage of construction
employees can be contributed to Brexit because it has introduced restrictions related to travel and
employment of EU workers in UK. This is created labour shortage in UK and increase the cost of
hiring labour specifically unskilled labour. This economic factor
can affect economic completion of the construction project of building a shopping centre. It is
important to understand and determine the impact of this economic factor on the shopping centre
construction project in order to create a suitable project and hire employees in a timely
manner so that shortage of labour does not affect or delete the construction project. In addition to
this another factor which can cause dilly or budget extends in the shopping centre construction
project is changes in tariff and international trade laws after the implementation of Brexit. The
changes in construction supply chain introduced by implementation of Brexit needs to be
understood in order to my sister significance of this economic factors and take proactive
measures to reduce the negative impact of brexit on the shopping centre construction project.
Construction projects are also associated with historical issues because construction projects
affect the architectural legacy of an area and there needs to be consideration of the historical
significance of the location of construction in order to ensure that historical heritage of the region
is maintained (Goh and et. al., 2020). In context of the project of shopping centre construction
the region in which the construction project will take place is London Docklands. This area is
the riverfront in former docks in London and is located in inner eastern South East

London. The docks were formerly part of port of London at one of the world’s
largest port. After the regeneration of the document it became the mean area for commercial and
residential usage. The historical issue associated with constructing a shopping centre in this area
is that steps need to be taken so that the historical legacy associated with one of the most
important historical docks is protected.
The regeneration of the London Docklands area also led to the creation of some conflicts
between the new and old communities which is a social challenge which can impact the
construction of shopping centre in east Docklands London. The social challenge can introduce
time delays as collaboration with community is important in successfully completing a
construction project. It can also increase costs as handling social disputes conflicts and legal
action requires huge amount of financial investment which can lead to budget extensions
(Jędrzejczak and et. al., 2021). There is need to mitigate these social challenges by collaborating
with the community and understanding community problems to ensure that conflict does not
arise during construction and shopping centre is developed harmoniously. This will also support
sustainable construction of the shopping centre as the community will not be negatively affected
because of the construction project.

Sustainability is one of the primary concerns in the construction industry because

sustainable sources can be used in construction of the shopping centre project in east Docklands
campus which will have a significant improvement on environmental damage caused by the

for the shopping centre construction project. Precast concrete is a construction product produced
by casting concrete in a reusable model or form which is then cured in a controlled environment
transported to the construction site and lifted into the specific place tube used in exterior and
interior walls. This is a sustainable source for construction projects because it is 100%
recyclable in combination with steel safe sustainable earthquake resistant material (Li and et. al.,
2018). The justification for using this sustainable raw material in the construction project for

reduces manpower requirements tremendously.
Recycled plastic can also be used for constructing the shopping centre in east Docklands
London. There are different ways between recycle plastics can be directly used for improving
sustainability in construction projects. This is because using recycled plastics in construction
projects not only improves The trend of efficient energy but it also saves space in landfills and
reduces costs to even lower level. In addition to this the usage of recycled plastic can also help
save on the cost of other materials such as wood and slate (Li, Gu and Liu,
2018). Recycled plastic can be used in different elements of constructing buildings including
roofing tiles, concrete, indoor insulation, structural lumber, windows, bricks, fences, carpeting
and floor tiles.
Another material which can be used for improving sustainability of shopping centre
constructed in east London Docklands campus is plant based Polyurethane rigid foam. This is
an eco friendly construction material because it protects against mould and pests and has longer
life span in comparison to other understandable sources of construction. The justification for
using this construction material for shopping centre in east London Docklands is that it has high
R value meaning it is high quality thermal material and waste less energy to heat or cool
homes. This will benefit the shopping centre even after construction as less energy will be used
for cooling or heating the building resulting in improving sustainability for longer time.
In addition to this, usage of solar energy in construction of shopping centre in east London
Docklands campus can also improve sustainability of the project. Solar energy in construction
projects can save significant amount of money that may be related to electricity bill and
also it usage of solar energy provides tax benefits to construction projects. These two positive
aspects associated with use of solar energy in construction projects are the justification
of adopting solar energy sources in construction of shopping centre in east London Docklands
campus.
Low emitting materials and products can also be used in construction to enhance
sustainability. This improves human health but also has a long term positive impact on
environment (Liu and et. al., 2019). Extensive range of environmental friendly products can be
used in construction including adhesives interior paints coatings sealants composite wood
flooring thermal ceilings and walls. The justification for suggesting this material to improve

that it helps gain green building credits from agencies like LEED, IGCB and GRIHA.

thermal mass insulation and glazing work to minimise unwanted heat gain and loss. This
technique for passive design system will benefit the environment as extra energy will not be
consumed for keeping the building at appropriate temperature during season change. The passive
cooling technique which will be used for the construction of the shopping centre in East London
is to emphasize cross ventilation. This will support natural environment acting as a cooling
system to keep the building cool and airy during summer. In addition to this, the passive design
technique will also be beneficial for creating an open environment which is necessary
requirement for safe and secure buildings after the COVID-19 pandemic. Optimal insulation
and wooden shutter will also be part of the passive design technique to control heat of the
building without much energy consumption. This will support sustainable construction and have
positive impact on the environment.

From the above report it is determined that construction of a sustainable building requires
understanding the political, social historical and economical issues related to construction.
Different energy sources such as recycled plastic and low emitting materials can be used to
enhance sustainability during construction project. Focus on health and safety of the onsite
