The awareness among the construction professionals could be increased from this study on sustainable materials so that those could be adopted in construction projects. 2.Specific Objectives: This project is focused on investigating and analysing the importance of sustainable materials for construction. In this project, the presently used materials for sustainable construction will be analysed to provide an overview of sustainability and green construction. The benefits on the use of sustainable materials in construction projects could be determined with the help of this project. 3.Introduction/Background Presently, a major concern that is faced by the construction industry is reducing the impact on humans or environment due to construction projects. According to Kibert (2016), The methods that are being used for construction today are having high impact on the environment as well as humans. Hence, there is a need to adopt sustainable materials for construction so that a sustainable future could be ensured for the next generation. 4.Importance of Sustainable materials in construction and presently used sustainable materials (Explicit knowledge on the subject) This section presents the importance of sustainable materials in construction projects along with the sustainable materials that are being used presently by the construction industry. 4.1 Importance of sustainable materials The sustainable materials have various advantages over other traditional construction materials as they are environment friendly. The adoption of sustainable materials in construction is essential for the modern construction industry to reduce the impact on environment as well as humans for ensuring sustainable future for the next generation (Khatib 2016). Sustainable materials provide an added advantage that is reduction in cost for building operations and maintenance in long term. The production of commercial concrete produces tons of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that results into environmental pollution that causes high impact on environment (Kylili & Fokaides 2017). Straw bales are being used for replacing the traditional construction materials and it has a high insulating ability. It is a renewable source which is both sustainable as well as affordable. The use of recycled plastic is used for producing concrete and this practice helps to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. Wood is another sustainable material which provides various advantages over other construction materials. 4.3 Benefits of sustainable construction materials In the present day, there has been increase in concern for the environment and sustainability. Recently, construction projects are completed using sustainable construction materials as they offer various advantages from both economic and environmental perspective (Petrovic, Vale & Zari 2017). Various factors are there that have to be considered while determining sustainable building materials. The efficiency of resources is an important factor that should be considered means the materials that could be used efficiently without much effort. The usage of salvaged building materials from other construction projects is an effective strategy for sustainable construction. The reuse of materials also helps to reduce the energy consumption required during construction. The design of buildings or other structures should be made such that it will be energy efficient and avoid wastage of resources (Wong & Zhou 2015). The selection of right materials is essential for architects so that the energy consumption could be dramatically reduced which is required for operation of a building. 5.Initial Findings (Tacit knowledge) 5.1 Sustainable construction Sustainable Construction is referred to application of sustainable methods or materials in construction projects that are compliant with the environmental rules and standards for energy saving. It also refers to introduction of materials that are environment friendly to ensure sustainability of buildings (Rashid & Yusoff 2015). For ensuring sustainable construction, the importance of sustainable materials must be clear to the construction professionals. The benefits that will be achieved by adoption of sustainable materials is dependent on the selection of appropriate material to be used in construction projects. 5.2 Role of construction firms and government in sustainable construction Various benefits will be gained by construction firms if they invest in sustainable technologies and make use of sustainable materials. The construction firms have to analyse the environmental rules and standards related to energy efficiency and sustainability (Kylili & Fokaides 2017). The government could also exempt tax on the sustainable building materials so that more and more companies could incline towards sustainable construction. 5.3 Sustainability and Green Construction The concept of green construction is a step ahead of sustainability and it demonstrates how the impact on environment due to construction can be minimized. In some cases, it also helps to balance impact of construction projects on humans as well as environment (Jalaei & Jrade 2015). Green construction helps to set specific standards for sustainability and determining the required construction methods or materials that could help in sustainable construction. 6.Executive Summary The selection of appropriate material is essential for any construction project as a poor choice may have impact on the project quality and lead to high cost. The cost may increase during the operations or maintenance in the long term and it may also rise as a threat to the human or the environment. Presently, a major concern of the construction industry is how sustainable materials could be used in construction to reduce the environmental impact. In this research, the analysis is carried out on the advantages of using sustainable materials along with the factors that are affecting the use of green materials in the construction industry. This research contributes towards better understanding on the selection of sustainable materials so that improvements could be achieved in construction projects such that those have no impact on the human or environment.
