Introduction
Sustainability is used in Stockholm agreement (1972), which means to address the
issues which are related to environment, economic and social development. In this
agreement, there are mainly 26 principles for the use of sustainable development. For the use
of construction in buildings the most important things are use sustainable methods and
materials. Sustainable materials are used through our consumer and industrial economy that
can be produced. There are mainly best eco-friendly material like recycle steel, Bamboo and
sheep’s Wool. In society there are different kind of approaches which are helpful and
effective in making sustainable building approaches. As most of the construction sites can use
electronic glass, solar thermal cladding, structural and attractive 3D painting which are useful
and kind in nature (Arroyo, Tommelein and Ballard, 2016) With the help of renewable and
recycling measures, reducing energy consumption uses and create a healthy environment will
make a strong impact on friendly and pollution free environment. In this project, critically
evaluation is conduct on construction methods and different kind of material for build an
environmental projects. This report is done with BREEM category which is provided a
critical future development for the Attenborough Nature Reserve visitors centre.
Main Body
Overview
Attenborough Building, is the new development to fruition. Which are used for
sustainable development is the development that complete the need which actually present
without compromising which create the ability of the future generation which meet own
needs in order to sustainable development.

In UK the implementation, the energy and natural environment is used, which
include, economy and development, social justice and different kind of communities (Bashar
and et.al., 2016). One of the four priorities which are used by the UK, sustainable
consumption and production, different kind of climate change and energy, natural resources
and different kind of sustainable communities. These four aspects are very helpful to sustain
the environment and make pollution free environment in the society. Sustainable
development are used to design which main aim is to provide a balanced solution which offer
a balanced working condition, alongside help in reducing the impact of the environmental
impact for both condition, in now and for future also. For this to construct the whole
lifecycle, include location of the building, its design, different kind of operations and
maintained for the use of construction material and different kind of practices which are used
and the impact of change in future will also considered as the sustainable development on the
construction side. The study of sustainable development in construction site, will create a
new sight towards the construction viewpoint (Cacciotti and et.al., 2018). I learned different
kind of advantage and disadvantage, which are used in order to make some focus on different
kind of construction methods and materials with having thoroughly research and conducting a
deep evaluation on the case study of Attenborough building.

This building is known as David Attenborough building many years from now, the
name is Arup building, and I found that this name is based on the RIBA Gold medal winner
sir Phillip Dowson of Arup associates. This construction was completed in 1971 and use
critical option from outset building. The main example of refurbishment of a definite example
in 1960s architectural nature that will demonstrate the highest level of environmental
sustainability that can easily conserve the environment and useful for the biodiversity setting
in rural and urban area.
Project objectives
The original building of the project is include setting capacity of 500 people theatre
and a museum of zoology, accommodated with the large size podium. Furthermore the
academic and administrative offices are accommodated in two freestanding towers in the
building. Then in the updated building construction site will retain the theatre and only
extend the museum. According to my research, the upper level will retain some laboratories
but major area of the building is used in making new home of Cambridge conservation
initiatives (CCI). This is a collaborative partnering of 8 different but like same minded
conservation organisation, which are make an commitment to enhance the biodiversity cause

and safeguard the habitat conservation (Ebrahimi and et.al., 2017). The CCI team was move
into the building in 2015 when the project seems to complete properly. The primary objective
of the project is to make the building effective and energy efficient and slowly decrease their
carbon footprint within the country.
Figure 3Attenborough Building Stock Photos and Images, 2021
As per my record the primary objective of the CCI is to build an inspirational
exemplar of sustainability in their widest sense. And furthermore, their second most
important aim is to encouraging urban biodiversity for making a creation of an environment
that enable the continuous assessment for the use of sustainable development. The
architecture team have arisen different kind of objectives for the development of building.
They explain that the new construction of the building will be used as the most expensive and
vulnerable use of sustainable development within a country. The work culture and
constructive material which are used by in project is make a sustainable approach and their
material is effective and make less pollution in environment. All these objectives are made by
Attenborough Building, to make some attractive and proof that construction which are
somehow majorly defect the environment sometimes when it uses in right manner will be
effective good for environment.
Different kind of challenges
While working on this building construction native, the investigation is used to
performed energy performance that actually inform the detail of design approach. This will
help in t complete the full audit was work as an undertaken using different kind of data from
the last three past year. Somehow this will show as the pattern which are used for energy

purpose. At the same time, fabric which is used in making the building was assessed with
some full thermal study. This study actually define the number of energy which is used or
heat loss and thermal bridges. This is related when this project and the study of thermal
power is used to highlight the poor thermal condition and make some window frames, this
heat will loss from the above concrete panel which are actually above or below window
(Kader and et.al., 2017) All these things create some major problem while using construction
area. To improve this they use building use study’s methodology to increase the number of
winter comfort, noise, productivity, design, different way to find the constructive approach
and layout the findings. This result further can be re-assessed to measure the degree of
improvement.
Figure 4Attenborough Building Stock Photos and Images, 2021
When it comes to make some sustainable development approaches it means they are
saying that build a design for construction in a way to work as a global strategy which
actually needed to use energy, occupants, resource the use material, transport, local
community and work as an emissions and make different kind of renewable resources. For
completing this project they are using GHS emission, Different kind of energy consumption

programme, renewables electric heat, use the resources, road transport, and air pollutants,
different type of land use, employment and education all are helpful in improving the
performance of the construction site for making a sustainable approach (Xiong and et.al.,
2021).
BREEAM model
For completing this project the most needed thing is used a BREEAM, which actually
stand for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methods. BREEAM is
a model which are used in UK new construction sites for make an assessment that is actually
used to improve, measures and certify the social media, environmental and economic
sustainability for the novel constructions. Thus, it is said that this model is achieved in the
construction site due to some more integration and major project team who work in different
stages in order to design and complement the new and effective construction design. The new
aim for making the BREEM Model is to use all the material with sustainable approach and
solve sustainable issues that arise when constructing a new building using different key
categories (Kazemi and et.al., 2019). There are some major challenges and issues which are
related to environmental issues and different channels like global warming, which increase
due to ever increasing pollution, fossil fuel depletions, Ozone depletions, Transport
congestion, Air pollutants, waste generations, water extraction, acid rain, water pollution, and
mineral extraction. All are related to major environmental issues which are affect the growth
of constriction sites. All of these issues are generally affect all type of industry but main
relation is related to construction site business, as they are mainly relate to the environmental
effects. For decreasing the impact of construction business on environment, they are using
BREEAM model, which help most of the construction businesses like Attenborough
Building, who used this model to remove the wrong environmental impact effects and
improve sustainable approach for the constructive building purpose.
Document Page
Figure 5The David Attenborough Building, 2021
There are various benefits of BREEAM, as it will help the company to use
comprehensive business models to remove the environmental impact on the society and on
environment as well. Secondly, this will help in making a significant discriminate in
development with higher environmental performance and help in last to evaluate their
performance. Third benefit of BREEAM, is it will assign the quality mark which state that
this building is using all the legislation and regulation while making constructive building
approach. Fourth approach is to make the low running cost and improved the health standard
and create a wellbeing occupant for the growth of the construction site (Khatib, 2016). Last
benefit of BREEAM is to make different methods for using environmental credentials to arise
funds which are useful for organisation, client’s different investors, planning authority of the
specified business building and many more. After having so much benefits of this model is to
use the unexpected approach from minimal to aspirational approach. With the help of this
model most of the constructive business are able to make a strong base differentiation within
regulatory framework and aspirational approach. In the Attenborough Building, they
particular use different regulatory framework for completing the aspiration and and try to
reduce the burden of environmental impact which create pollution and make unhealthy
environment for the normal people of country. BREEAM model is used for the offices,
Document Page
schools, retail, industrial, courts and prisons which are used for the purpose of attaining
different kind of models. BREEAM model is regular updates and reviewed to make sure
about the different kind of regulation and includes new type of technology (Kibert, 2016).
BREEAM is used mainly for the members and different kind of interested parties which are
helpful for make them in order to make interested parties. Mainly the issue which are covered
in health and management issue in construction business are work as management, health and
wellbeing area, energy, transport, water and material, waste products which actually work in
an effective manner to remove the pollution.
This model is further use in Attenborough Building, to make and use some sustainable
resources which are helpful in maintaining the source and follow the rules and regulation in
order to complete the demand of environmental ratio in country. The use of sustainable
approach and the material which are used in construction is must be effective and ready to
serve environmental impact (Kim and et.al., 2019). This will also help in making the long
term impact on society and useful for growth of construction site in order to complete the
demand of society and legislative policies to remove the effect the harmful environmental
strain.

Fabric used in making building structure
The building structure which is used in their flexible structure provide a suitable
adaptability and make high standard in floor to ceiling heights that are actually very suitable
for the growth of natural ventilation in the building. Secondly they are using concrete frame
and exposed concrete soffits that are in good conditions and that will be used for passive
cooling within the structure of building and their applicable architecture design. The main
role to make a high level up gradation in the building is to make and build an envelope that
will be up graded beyond building regulation which have carry U-shape requirement.
Furthermore, the thermal strategy was used to developed different kind of
construction and help in evaluating that how the each type could be updated in environment
which are helpful and contributed in improving the performance of building in nature. With
the help of increasing proposing more radical treatment to use less architecture for actually
use and minimise the concept of different treatments for others. For example they increase
the size of museum but this methodology of the building is used to preserve both architectural
conservatives and make strong building control over the year in future (Lee, Elam and
Darling, 2016). The strategy includes high level of new insulation which affect the
replacement for the glass with double glazing, matching distinctive fenestration pattern and
make different profile as closely as possible. Another incentive they are using is they are
shifting their lead cladding panel with anodized aluminium panel which are long term
effective and sustainable in approach. And in last the roof, which is made up of thin wood
wool slab that will be replaced with soffit lined with different phase changing material which
actually affect the cooling nature of concrete surfaces. Furthermore for motivating the green
roof, with some planting chosen strategies that actually chosen for selecting local landscape
that will encourage the wildlife and reduce the wasteful activities of rainwater storage.

Figure 7The David Attenborough Building, 2021
All these system are so effective and applicable for the use of sustainable nature,
which help the constructive site and nearby society to improve the condition of nature. The
use of sustainable nature and their effective control over the material and production goods
are effective for the use of environment. All the material which is used in chosen case study
is effective and remove the burden of pollution on society and make a strong impact on
environmental issue (Lee and et.al., 2017).
Sustainable system
For making more sustainable approach in the society through the use of construction
site, all the services of the building are being replaced but in reality the priority is given to the
sectors which are using minimum energy requirements through the difficult passive means.
This means it will include the maximisation of natural ventilation and using existing concrete
structure for cooling rooftop. New freshening ductwork and different kind of plant with low
specific which are relatable fan powers and that fell heat recovery that can be naturally
ventilated for example lecture theatre and the use of museum. For making an unexpected
change, from 2030 to 2050, they are using high scenario for saving and work in the
constructive climatic change in environment prospective. A different kind of numbers which

were used to make future proofing and work as the high cooling roof that are comes with
mixed mode ventilation. All of these are comes under the sustainable development which are
used by the chosen Attenborough building, to complete the need of sustainable development
and useful for making some environment friendly material (Lin, Tseng and Pai, 2018). Which
are used as the material for on-site construction equipment’s. Low profile photovoltaic panels
and a new glass atrium that make a rooftop which are having photovoltaic glasses that are
being used in building. Low use of energy lighting and occupancy detection and daylight
diming that will assist the people who are stay in building and reduce the use of artificial
lighting source. With the help of photovoltaic panels and windows natural daylight has been
prioritised and the introduction of new roof light and windows are introduced in order to
make some conservative suggestions. This will help the building to make attractive and
effective use of constructive approach in order to maintain the sustainable development in
their material.
Figure 8New centre for biodiversity conservation named after Sir David Attenborough, 2021
Another sustainable approach which is used in making constructive building is to
recover the rainwater recovery and low-flow water that help in fixture the platform and use
SUDS drainage system that will use as the external landscape the area. Furthermore in garden

the use of roof there are in the form of bee hotels, bat and bird boxes with some CCTV
connections that work on displaying the CCI atrium and that museum. In addition to that,
they are using some collaboration techniques which are useful to work in state wall that have
been designed that provide a flora and fauna environment in the museum and CCI area
(Mulliner, Malys and Maliene, 2016). Furthermore to support the bio-diversity nature the
building will be used various different type of approaches that will extensively metered and
give the result which actually make a display in real time throughout the building which
support and encourage the both type of environment and responsible for using different type
of occupation that make a strong impact on nature of project and somehow responsible for be
attentive and attractive in view for the society.
This will further support the sustainable approach and make some constructive step to
provide a clear view. Beyond the use of ensuring new material that meet the sustainable
development criteria, which will make the future longevity of future fabric in the building
and that have been considering throughout the development of comprehensive nature which
are helpful in cleaning and marinating the strategic approach. Its different characteristic
nature of the society that are helpful for building façade which has never been cleaned in the
society. And it seems a biggest experiment to the development and different kind of strategies
that are safe in use and active as well as modest nature (Nisticò, 2017).

Sustainable plan
As because there are lack of different sustainable plan which can affect the growth of
models that deal with according to the nature and level of building. For this they are making a
bespoke sustainable plan, which actually include two major parts; one is framework, which
means to set the goals and decide the team structure and design the team according to
different contractors and various building user and second one is Process map. Which means
to capture the evidence and documents to help in decision making process (Rashid and et.al.,
2017). The above diagram show the main ten themes of the building which are useful for
collaborative and sustainable workshops which include building design and make a
sustainable pilot programme which means include different kind of targets, education,
wellbeing, collaboration. All these are related to energy and carbon effect, biodiversity,
wasteful activities, waters, pollution, different kind of material and transport. Furthermore
carbon has been used and majorly a particular focus. While using operational modelling and
prediction during making constructive approach in building the running cost of the building
are used and post-refurbishment. With the help of actual occupancy and different kind of
Document Page
profile in different departments help the building which were used and work as an accounting
form all the unregulated source and emission that must be work as a small power (Zhang and
et.al., 2017).
After all this the result which occur show that there are 40% reduction is occur due to
dividing annual operations of carbon foot pints which are achievable. The use of building
which are used as a case study for completion of project has investigated that they are
embodied the carbon saving and achieved from retaining different kind of building rather
than demolishing and re0builidng the nature of constructive department. With the help and
majorly focusing on sustainable focus group of users, the university and design team have
continued for meeting the design process and will be work as the best operational activity
which use eco-friendly products (Summerton and et.al., 2016). With sustainability plan, they
use soft landing targets, ensure the sustainable operations for building and make a long term
impact on sustainability. In last it is said that for making the constructive approach and use
sustainable development material and models help the building to work in such an eco-
friendly environment and make an impact on country which effect the environment in good
manner. With some major initiatives they can use the unproductive activities in least and
those operations which are working in a significant manner then that must be used in high
quantity to remove the use of artificial and unhygienic activities.
Techniques for using sustainable building approach
This is very important to know, that after knowing more about the concept of
Attenborough Building, and the challenges which are faced by them. Some of the solutions
are provided which they should be used in order to make some sustainable building approach.
Which are explained in detail:
Prefabricating material: While completing construction as much in controlled and
environmental as possible that has been improved which are based on the quality of
building and result in trash, and different kind of possible approaches (Thomas,
Mishra and Asiri, 2019). With the help of using prefabricating material, Attenborough
building constructer are used in order to maintain and complete some sustainable
approaches.
Construction with waste management: Reducing the waste material on construction
site is very important and useful for the constructor to make and adopt some
sustainable approaches. They should use different kind of waste and to use the waste

material and through in such a significant and different manner which never affect
environment. This must be main need and work of contractor on construction site.
With the help of using right waste management technique it will be very helpful for
the environment and society as well. With the increasing number of building and
being sophisticated area in less demographical measurement. It is important to work
in some sustainable manner.
Managing the site for making improvement in environment: The right way to use
the extra wastage like storm water and different kind of waste toxic material are very
harmful for the society and bio-diversifying living beings at the same time.
Furthermore not only the use of right material or right way to reduce the wastage is
important for the construction (Zahid and et.al., 2018). But also to make sure about
the health of their workers is again important. This is one of the easiest way to reduce
pollution and make restriction, as if the worker is healthy and safe in the construction
site then they are able to make some more different and innovative kind of approach
while fulfilling the main aim and objective while completing construction.
Lean manufacturing to reduce energy: This model is helpful to rethink on the
material which they are using and make some different approach. That sometimes
help very much to reduce the waste and harmful material on construction site
(Thomas, Mishra and Asiri, 2019. This method saved sustainable amount of time and
manpower which are actually not important when it talk about waste and
sustainability approach in construction work.
Material selection: Architects and various clients must be make sure about the
material which they are using and selecting by using different kind of material and
from various local resources. For example they can further use, in selecting LEED
material which are provide a deep support in order to select the material and use the
product in right manner. This will help the architect to remove the material and avoid
landfill and use more and more resources of green material.
Conclusion
From the above report it is concluded that, there are different kind of approaches
which are useful and helpful for environmental friendly nature. To make some constructive
and sustainable approach for the use of sustainable methods and materials. With the use of
right approach and right methodology, any construction site can be make some environmental
friendly approaches that are suitable and effective in nature. In addition to that the use of
Document Page
BREEAM model any construction site will be make some effective approach with covering
major legislative and conclusive approach. In society there are various approaches which are
useful and sustainable from the aspect of sustainable development and that will lead to an
amazing and eco-friendly material approach. All these are somehow effect the environment
and retain the long term impact on nature with using some sustainable material and methods.
