SYSTEMS THINKING AND SUSTAINABILITY1
Introduction
As discussed by Breuer et al. (2018, pp.256-286), the major focus of sustainability is
related to the proper fulfilment of the needs of present operations of various organizations
without making any compromises with demands of future generations. Three main pillars are
considered to be an important aspect related to sustainability that include economic aspects,
environmental aspects and social aspects as well (Hessami et al. 2019, pp.1-13). The three Ps
that are able to represent sustainability and various sustainable initiatives implemented by the
organizations are people, planet and profits. Sustainability is also known for providing
encouragement to the business organizations so that various decisions can be made with
respect to years of operations and revenues that are gained in the industry as well (de Gooyert
et al. 2016, pp.135-145).
According to Jain, Leka and Zwetsloot (2018, pp. 221-240), the organizations
operating in various industries need to maintain their operations base on various sustainability
goals that are developed by them. The concept of systems thinking is a major approach that is
related to the proper integration of different components that are a part of the entire
organizational operations. The issues faced by an organization can be solved effectively with
the proper implementation of systems thinking in the modern organizations (Kin et al. 2019,
pp. 339-360). The analysis in the essay will be mainly based on the levels of proper
integration of systems thinking with sustainability within the organizations. Political debates
that take place in the operations of coal mines will be discussed in the essay. The influence of
effective systems thinking on various decisions of the government are also an important
aspect related to the analysis in the essay.

As discussed by Lai, Lin and Wang (2015, pp.867-871), political debates that have
occurred in various coal mines and various benefits that are offered by governments are
major factors that influence sustainable initiatives that are developed by them. The activities
that are performed by various organizations towards the usage of renewable energy is
influenced by changes in prices of coal in the different countries. The prices of carbon have
the ability to influence the prices related to electricity that is affected by coal. Profit margins
developed by coal mine can also affect the demands based on electricity (Lozano 2015,
pp.32-44).
According to Pant, Adhikari and Bhattarai (2015, pp.206-212), investments that are
provided in proper development of the renewable energy are significant aspects which can
have an impact on electricity demands. The topmost place has been developed by China in
proper production and the consumption of coal. Chinese government had announced the
moratorium related to the opening of the new coal mines and closing the older mines that are
considered to be inefficient in nature. The various exports of coal that are done by the
Australian organizations have increased for the purpose of improving the job based
opportunities (Salgado, Abbott & Wilson 2018, pp.163-177).
As discussed by Schaefer, Corner and Kearins (2015, pp.394-413), employment
related factors in coal mines have been reduced due to opening of the new coal mines. The
idea related to the formation of new coal mines is considered to be a major factor that is
aimed at the ways by which job security of the workers can be increased as well. The job
development for employees after close down of the old mines is also not possible and the
governments are also not able to support opening of coal mines. The subsidies that are
provided by the government for opening new coal mines is helpful for the increase in levels
of job security of the employees (Sroufe 2017, pp.315-329).

According to Thomas (2018, pp.1530-1556), the exports of coal in Australia have also
fallen in last few years and this is not a suitable time for proposing the development of new
mines in the country. The operations of the new coal mines are based on the proper usage of
automations and this is further able to reduce the security of jobs of the workers. Lack of
export levels in coal mines in Australia has an impact on the jobs that are provided to the coal
mine workers. The start of various new mines is related to subsidies that are offered by
automated technologies and government (White and van Koten 2016, pp.25-46).
According to Afr.com. (2019), the jobs and employment of workers in the coal mines
of Australia are influenced in a huge manner by the usage of various technologies.
Employment levels in the coal mines are reduced in a huge manner and this is also able to
influence the living standards of individuals as well. The economic factors and levels of
politics in the coal mines are different from each other and the profits are influenced as well.
Coal mine owners are however provided with major levels of support by implementation of
the concept based on moratorium. The rush that is experienced in transition levels of coal
have influenced the opening of new coal mines in the country (Williams et al. 2017, pp.866-
881).
As discussed by Zetterlund, Hallstedt and Broman (2016, pp.287-292), The various
plans that are based on protecting the coal mines in a proper manner are not influenced
positively by prices of coal. Industrial revolution has been based on the operations of various
coal mines and the politics that have been developed with respect to the development of new
mines as well. The different plans that are formed by the government need to be better and
the employees need to be provided with major levels of security as well. The fall that is
experienced by organizations in the coal industry is considered to be high and it is also able
to influence the operations of firms in the UK. Earlier the coal industry had the capability to
