Workplace safety is important for both employers and employees who want a healthy working
environment. Health and safety are critical factors for all industries to promote not only
employee wellness but also as a moral obligation to protect the employee. Nowadays, health
and safety regulations are critical for the smooth operation of businesses (Scott, 2019). The
Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 requires employers to ensure occupational health and
safety to the greatest extent reasonably possible. Employers are required by the act to remove
or monitor all possible work-related threats to health and safety. Employers of more than five
employees must create a health and safety policy statement outlining how they intend to handle
health and safety in their organization (Scott, 2019).
In the United Kingdom, the Health and Safety Executive enforces health and safety rules in
manufacturing workplaces, while more than 400 local governments enact legislation in private
workplaces (Scott, 2019). The HSE was established under the Health and Safety at Work Act,
which includes powers for the HSE to impose employer duties and penalties for noncompliance
(Scott, 2019). The Act imposes obligations on employers to ensure the health and safety of all
on the premises, including permanent staff, temps, seasonal workers, self-employed workers,
customers, guests, and the public, to the greatest extent “reasonably practicable.” The Act
authorizes the government to issue directives, rules, and Authorized Codes of Practice outlining
employers' detailed roles in all aspects of occupational health and safety, including tension,
computer use, and working with hazardous chemicals (Scott, 2019). Employees' civil rights are
outlined in a variety of legal rights and laws. The key health and safety laws are:
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which establishes an employer's statutory
duties.
Guidance, rules, and ACOPs (Approved Codes of Practice) under this Act, which
employees must follow.
Employment Rights legislation, which establishes employment security rights.
Common-law privileges that outline an employer's basic legal responsibilities.
Company procedures, work contracts, and employee handbooks.
Workplace- Health & Safety Regulations 1992
These regulations extend to all facets of the workplace and mandate employers to provide a
secure and appropriate workplace for all job activities (Coster, 2018). This involves providing

break areas, restrooms, and drinking water, as well as adequate lighting, ventilation, and
workspace. Safety precautions must also be taken, such as adequately maintaining appliances,
floor spaces, and protecting against potential accidents. The Workplace (Health, Safety, and
Welfare) Regulations 1992 apply to most workplaces (Coster, 2018). Employers are required to
ensure that the working environment is as secure and risk-free as reasonably possible, and that
adequate equipment is provided where applicable.
The Regulations are below:
Windows and DSE ventilation
Lighting service maintenance
The working climate, such as traffic and the danger of slides, trips, and falls.
Objects that fall.
Entry and exit of waste.
Restrooms, dressing rooms, and meals/drinks are all available.
The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992
DSE users are covered by the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations
1992. Staff who use a workstation/DSE equipment for a considerable amount of time (generally
more than an hour per day or daily) to complete their work are classified as DSE users.
According to the DSE Regulations, related staff are those who use DSE on a regular basis for
an hour or more at a time (Coster, 2018). This includes people who use computers, tablets, and
smartphones. Employers must take precautions to protect these employees from the health
hazards associated with operating with computer screen equipment (Coster, 2018). The
Regulations also extend to DSE users who operate from home or from a remote location, as
well as contractors and temporary staff. Employers must comply with the following regulations:
Perform a risk assessment at each DSE user's workstation. This will help to recognise
threats and assess potential risks. A detailed record of the evaluation and its results
should be maintained and checked.
Take precautions to minimize danger.
Make time for eye exams with an optician.
Be sure to take daily breaks.

Provide adequate training and information to all staff who have been identified as DSE
users.
The Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999
This legislation specifies what employers must do to handle health and safety in accordance
with the Health and Safety at Work Act (Glenn, 2019). The most important criterion for
employers is to conduct a risk assessment. When you have five or more staff, you must
document the key results of the risk evaluation. The Management of Health and Safety at Work
Regulations 1999, also known as the "Management Regs," impose a responsibility on
employers to evaluate and mitigate risk (Glenn, 2019). Employers are specifically required to do

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 –
RIDDOR
Certain occupational accidents, illnesses, or events are required to be recorded under RIDDOR.
Employees should notify their boss of any injuries or incidents (Coster, 2018). Employers,
administrators, and supervisors have a legal duty to obey reporting protocols correctly. If the
event is work-related, the rule occurs when there is a dangerous occurrence, injury, accident, or
disease. When determining whether an incident is reportable, keep the following in mind:
Injuries, both fatal and non-fatal.
Occupational illnesses.
Dangerous accidents (also known as "near misses").
Incidents that cause more than seven days of missed work Incidents involving gases.
