Resources required Review the LEARN materials in Topic 2 provided, you may also want
to refer to the recommended texts/resources for additional information
in preparation to undertake this assessment.
Results/Reassessment The short answer questions will be marked by your lecturer, and
the multiple choice questions will be marked automatically.
You need to achieve a satisfactory outcome (i.e. All questions answered
correctly). If this isnt received, a “Not Yet Satisfactory grade, will be
given and there will be a 72 hour enforced restriction preventing you from
commencing a second attempt.
If this occurs, we recommend you review the content of this topic,
and revisit the Student Unit and Assessment Outline to review and
understand why you have not met all the requirements.
If you are unsure about any key concepts it is recommend that
you contact your lecturer to discuss.
All students are entitled to two attempts to achieve each assessment
task within any unit enrolment period.
ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS
Q.1. Referring to SA charter of right & freedom of older people (page 25)
Choose three (3) of the areas identified (e.g. dignity and self-determination).
For each identified area, provide 1 example of how a support worker would apply this in their work role.
Area Identified Example
1 Standards of living and care An elderly has right to food and water. An example of violation
is not being helped with eating, and the serving is hurried
making others to miss meals. A support worker will intervene
and devote time to help the residents with eating.
2 Liberty and security of the person Older residents are kicked, insulted and slapped. A support
worker should ensure that the residents are not humiliated and
physically abused by examining each individual case and try to
create an awareness of their rights and report extreme cases to
the relevant authority.
3 Dignity and self-determination The older residents are tied to the bed using a belt to limit their
movement. A support worker should work towards ensuring
that the old people have the freedom of movement as far as is
practical. Any cases should be advised appropriately and
preventive measures taken

responsibilities. After they have ascertained their cause of unhappiness I will then go ahead and notify
them of the options available to pursue their case, and the administration’s commitment towards
ensuring quality in service delivery. During these times I will keep referring them to their rights and
responsibilities and even leave them with a document of reference or direct them where they can get
the document for the purposes of improving their awareness of their rights and responsibilities and
complaints procedure. I will also notify them of the procedure on handling such issues in case they
arise again.
To provide Mrs. Nella Paparella with necessary information ( Charter of Residents Right) which relates
to residents' rights and responsibilities with regard to staff, other residents and aged care system
generally.
