Teaching Air pollution
Teaching Geography to Students of Grade -4
Geography is a discipline of science that is devoted to the study of land , features , residents ,
flora –fauna of that place and studying the various phenomena of Earth and planets . It also helps
to study the relationship between environment and people. Grade -4 students are very young kids
and naturally they are in process of exploring about new things , teaching Geography to these
kids require a different type of approach that makes them learning about the various topics in
geography interesting. In any teaching the biggest tool is the knowledge of subject here
Geography . A teacher can only teach confidently when he/she has good hold on his/her subject
Then the next step will be to how to teach in interesting manner. Some of key steps suggested by
senior academia’s is as follows-
Making a proper lesson plan for teaching like what topics are going to be covered in this
session while teaching to the kids of a particular chapter or topic.
Small kids of grade 4 love to study with the help of visual materials such as charts ,
videos of actual location, globe , maps etc.
Developing the interest among students by giving them opportunity to ask questions and
giving their answers in interesting manner .
Another important tool is to give personal experiences , stories and other facts about
the concerned topic.
Developing a project for student related to the concerned topic also helps in teaching
effectively.
Topic – Air pollution
Learning outcome
The students will get detailed information about Air pollution.
Then students will learn about the air pollutants.
Students will learn about the main factors that creates the air pollution.

Teaching Air pollution
The students will learn about the effects of air pollution.
Then the prevention methods will be learned by students.
Further the detail of indoor air pollution will be given.
At the end some facts about air pollution will be taught.
Day 1 – Teaching Brief
What is Air Pollution?
Air pollution occurs when gas , dust , particles , smog and odor is introduced in the atmosphere
that is harmful for human beings , animals and plants in that surrounding. This makes air
contaminated or we can say dirty.
Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air that is made of various types of gases called
atmosphere. This atmosphere helps to protect the Earth and allows life to exist in it. Without this
atmosphere the days will be very intense . These particles and additional gases will create
misbalance in the atmosphere .
What is air pollutant ?
Things that pollute the air is called air pollutant . The examples of air pollutant are nitrogen
oxide , carbon monoxide , hydrocarbons , sand and dust particles , organic compounds etc..
There are two types of Pollutants –
1. Primary Pollutant – These are the pollutants that are directly pumped in the atmosphere
and makes it unclean. These include the carbon monoxide mainly coming out of
automobiles and burning of coal.
2. Secondary pollutant – It occurs when pollutants get mix with the chemical reaction and
form the dangerous pollutant in environment. Example of such pollutant is photochemical
smog.
Day-2 Teaching brief
What causes air pollution?

Teaching Air pollution
Air pollution is caused by both human and natural factors caused by human being . The human
activities that causes the air pollution are as follows-
Gases emitting from the factories , automobiles and other industries.
Gases emitting out due to burning of fossil fuels.
House hold burning of fuels and other activities.
What are affects of air pollution?
1. .Air pollution creates many health problems including problem in breathing.
2. It also causes irritation in eyes.
3. The air pollution creates the Acidic rain too.
The acid rain is caused by acidification in the atmosphere that is caused by the chemical
reactions that created the acidic compounds in the atmosphere. This happens when for example
when sulfuric acid combines with water droplets that make up the cloud and forming the acidic
rain. Acidic rain destroys the leaves of the plants.
Day-3 Teaching Brief
How can Air pollution be controlled?
The government is doing many efforts in controlling the air pollution by doing a strict check for
pollution in the vehicles , industries and factories by imposing laws and fines. Along with this
new types of fuels have been created like solar energy etc for reducing the usage of fossil fuels.
