Self-Driving Automobile
The automated vehicle technology of Google is a technological development. They are developed for the
ease of the common people. Google utilizes Lidar sensor technology to develop the concerned
automobile. Autonomous vehicle can be defined as the vehicle having the ability to sense its environment
as well move safely without any input given by any user (Poczter & Jankovic, 2014). The sensing of the
outer environment is done using various sensors that are used in the vehicle. Some of the sensors used
are like radar, sonar, lidar, GPS, internal measurement units and the odometry sensor. The advanced
control systems interpret all sensible data such that the vehicle can determine its navigation path, avoid
obstacles and other relevant signage. However many car uses semi – automated system in them such as
speed controls, emergency braking system and the parking the car in the lane (Howard & Dai, 2014).
There are various levels in automated vehicle ranging from 0 to 5. Level 0 represents no automation
where the driving operation is fully done by the driver himself or herself. Level 1 represents driver
assistance where all the driving operation is done by the driver but some of these operations are assisted
by some innovative features. Level 2 represents partial automation where the vehicle has mixed all the
automated operations such as steering and the acceleration of the vehicle but the driver should be in the
vehicle to sense all the environments around the vehicle. Level 3 represents conditional automation
where the driver need not require to sense the environment but he or she can stop the automated journey
and is able to continue the journey without the automated features provided in the car. The driver can now
continue the journey by driving the car manually. Level 4 represents high automation where the vehicle is
able to drive automatically in some conditions. In this level the driver also has an option to control the
vehicle. Level 5 represents fully automation where the vehicle is fully automated and has the ability to
drive itself in all conditions (Memon et al., 2016).
Google can face several issues while implementing the self-driving vehicle. Some of the
important issues are:
Road Condition: The condition of road can vary from places to places and it is a complex process to
detect the condition of any road. Some roads may be smooth while other can be rough. Some lanes can
be undefined and the external signal cannot be clear and can cause a vulnerable accident. The self-
driving automobiles developed by Google operates on the basis of the detailed pre – made maps or
locations. The developers should initially drive the vehicle throughout all the lanes and then the
developers create the map using the rotating lidar sensor which is situated on the roof of the vehicle. The
camera then transmits the pulses to measure the surroundings as well as the obstacles situated in the
road like fire hydrants, driveways and intersections (Lin, 2016). Now, the developers should insert the
map of every lanes throughout the world such that the automobile or the vehicle can operate. This is a
complex process for the mapping department of Google as the officials require to visit every place before

complex process for the mapping department of Google as the officials require to visit every place before
inserting the map on the storage. Moreover, the map should be updated in a regular basis. The present
condition of any road is unpredictable and thus each and every lane can be introduced with new
obstacles. Thus, the condition of the road can be an important factor for Google while introducing the
vehicle in the market.
Weather Conditions: The weather is also a critical factor for the introduction of this vehicle. The vehicle
should have an ability to operate any weather conditions. It should not malfunctions in case of any
weather disturbance.
Traffic Condition: The vehicle should sense all the traffics of the road. It can be traffic signal, obstacles,
human being. The vehicle should maintain all the traffic rules of the road such that it can avoid all road
accidents,
Cyber security: As the this technological development deals with many sensitive data and thus, the data
can be an important factor for Google and it should be ensured by Google that the business can securely
safe the data and the outsiders should not be able to misuse the data stored in the database such as
name of the passenger, age, contact details, banking details and many more credentials (Von Solms &
Van Niekerk, 2013).
The concerned technology comprises of some pros and cons. Some advantages of this
technological development are:
Safety: All kinds of traffic collusions such as tailgating, reaction time and rubbernecking are reduced
which alternatively increases the safety factor for the passengers in the vehicle. Safety is the primary
concern for the Google and the developers developed this technology keeping this factor in their mind
and the vehicle provides a safety journey to the passengers. The safety factor can reduce the insurance
cost of the vehicle.

obstacles found in their route. The route of the Project Wing is design by the Unmanned Air System
Traffic Management (UTM) platform who ensures that the drones will follow the route provided by them
and will avoid all the obstacles found in the route. The maximum distance covered by these drones is 14
km but for delivering the packages the distance is maintained within 10 km. The drone can fly up to four
hundred feet overhead the ground (X – Wing, 2019). The drones are quite safe as every elements of the
drones are kept backup like extra batteries, navigation systems and redundant motors. These backup
systems can be used by the officials in case of any failure.
Google can face numerous issues while implementing the Project Wing. Some of them are:

Conditional Awareness: Due to some natural disturbance the service can be put to hold such as heavy
lightning, bad weather and so on. In these cases an alert should be provided and the drone should be
able to sense the alert and should put the delivery process on hold.
Override Kill switch: When the drone travels a long distance there is a probability of lost the signal, it the
drone can be hijacked or hacked in some ways and the drone can be misused and thus some alert should
be provided by the drones to the officials regarding the signal strength.
Political Awareness: It is imperative that every politicians should provide special attention to the cost
benefit ratio with respect to their decisions.
Consumer Awareness: The consumer should be aware of all the terms and conditions of the aircraft such
that they can utilize the technology efficiently.
Noise Disturbance: The main signal can be mixed with the surrounding noise signal which can impact
negatively to the delivery service and thus there should be some equalizer such that the drone can avoid
all noise signals around it.
