Introduction
Mumbai city is experiencing many issues due to the rapid urbanization and unexpected
growth in private transport. Congestion on roads of Mumbai city is affecting the stockpile of
vehicles and have an impact on the city’s economies in various ways. Congestion occurrence
on the city roads inhibits traffic movement causing an unbearable increase of trip delay
(Duczynski, 2018). Expanding the current road or developing a new road is a temporary
solution to congestion. Constructing new roads is not an effective solution due to a variety of
environmental, financial and political reasons, as a matter of fact by establishing a higher
need of a vehicle to save time and travel smoothly leads to an increase in road congestion.
Due to the critical issue of existing and growing road congestion in Mumbai city,
technological solutions are needed to minimize traffic congestion.
Problem Statement
Mumbai city is experiencing an unexpected and growing number of people which is a bad
traffic management indicator and could be a critical reason behind congestion. The constant
movement of people towards the city for education, better employment, medical treatments
among others is another reason for the increased growth of congestion on the city roads.
Besides, unauthorized and illegal parking on the city roads has been causing traffic each day.
Parking cars near business district areas and markets is one of the major causes of traffic
jams. Lack of rapid and good public transport in Mumbai also leads to the increased use of
personal vehicles and cars, but the current highway and roads is not changing or supportive of
the growing number of cars. As such, traffic jam is intensifying at a distressing rate.

i. What are the main reasons for traffic congestion in Mumbai city?
ii. How does traffic congestion in affect Mumbai city?
iii. What are the technological solutions for traffic congestion in Mumbai city?
By answering the above questions, more insights about the causes of congestion will be
acquired. Besides, the effect of congestion will be revealed. As a result, possible
technological solutions about the issue of congestions in Mumbai city will be proposed. The
methodology applied in this research involves field work carried out in Mumbai city and
critical assessment based on traffic congestion impact, causes and possible technological
solution.
Question Comparison
The third question which is identifying the technological solutions for traffic congestions in
Mumbai City. The other two questions will just give a brief summary of the causes and
effects of traffic congestion on Mumbai City. The reason why the focus will be on the third
research question is because already the traffic congestion is already a problem in Mumbai.
As much as the causes and effects of traffic congestions do matter in identifying the relevant
solutions, they are already known. For instance, some of the causes of traffic congestions
include: the increasing population coming to the city for the purposes of education, business,
increased number of private vehicles, and unauthorized and illegal parking on the city roads
has been causing traffic each day among others. On the other hand, the effects of congestions
have been felt already. Congestion is associated with queuing, slower speeds and an
increased number of trips, which result in higher economy cost and also affect urban areas
and their residents. Besides, congestion has several indirect effects such as safety, life quality,
stress, marginal environmental and resource congestion impacts and affects road frontage
properties and side walkers. Additionally, congestion leads to wastage of precious time. The
