AbstractPreservation of art and craft is an integral part of preservation of culture and heritage of thecountry. Art is a form of expression that conveys the different perspectives of an artist.Technological advancement has benefitted the preservation of art and craft to a largeextent, as the methods of preservation have evolved with the evolution of technology. Thisessay discusses the different forms of art and use of technology in preservation of thesame. By looking into the gradual evolution of the process of art and craft preservation, theessay identifies the benefits or contribution of technology in preservation of art and craft.This paper evaluates the different aspects and use of technology and tries to evaluate thefuture trend of art preservation using technology. The paper is important in order tounderstand the contribution of technology in this field, which will be helpful forconducting further researches about the topic. The paper evaluates the need of use oftechnology in preservation art in today’s world. This paper would be increasingly helpfulfor the research students, artists and the designers who work in this field. This is becausethe paper gives a brief explanation of the technological advancements benefitting thetraditional art and crafts by comparing the traditional and modern methods of artdevelopment and preservation. The major purpose of this paper is to identify and analyzethe use of technology in the field of art and craft starting from art development topreservation of art.1

2. IntroductionTechnology can be defined as the application of scientific knowledge foraccomplishment of certain objectives. It is a collection of scientific methods, techniquesand skills. The use of technology can be seen in every aspect of life as people arebecoming increasingly dependent on technology for their daily works. Technology hasconsiderably occupied a large part of people’s life in order to enhance the quality of lifeand living. Technology not only saves a considerable amount of time, but also helps insaving a lot of money. It is an important gift to mankind that can be used according to theconvenience for a better and a more comfortable life. Intersection of art, craft andtechnology is considered as an interesting aspect of the technology. The study focuses ondifferent aspects of technology and its use in preservation of art and craft. Computers havegradually worked their way into the studio over the years with computer aided design andhigh tech lasers revolutionizing the field the art. Technology advancements have been seenin the field of art and craft as well. It is redefining the art in a completely new andsomewhat strange ways. Work of art and craft find different innovative ways with the helpof moving laser beams or the data gathered from air pollution. It is definitely strange andthoughtful how technology has the power to reinvent a particular thing or process in amore effective manner1.The use of technology in art and craft may not be a new concept; however, theincreasing use of technology to incorporate the unimaginable things such as weather report1Baxter, Gavin J., and Thomas M. into developing picturesque art is completely new. It is providing with different innovativeway to reinvent the various fields of art and craft. Technology finds its place in differentfield including its usage in body art. The report discusses the benefits of technology in thefield of art and craft. Technology finds its uses in the variety of phases of art and craft,which includes digital prints of the paintings, digital photography, and mixed media.Furthermore, noninvasive techniques such as infrared photography, X-ray radiography, X-ray fluorescence are used for investigation of the different components of historical paints,data of which helps in proper preservation of the same. Apart from this, the technology hasfound extensive usage in the in documenting and preserving this innovative work of artand crafts. However, the use of technology is not completely new in this field as thetraditional skill used in art and craft have gradually merged with technology. It can see itsroots in the traditional skill. This essay discusses the various aspects of technologicaladvancements that benefit the traditional practices of art and crafts. It further illustrates theadvent of technology in body hack and bio hacking. The use of technology in differentaspects of art and craft is elaborated in the following paragraphs.3. Literature ReviewTechnology in body artTechnological advances and implications can be seen in the field of body art aswell. However, the concept using body art as a technology is completely new. On theisland of Taiwan, the different body art artists are crafting the body art technology thattransforms the human skin into a user interface. With the advent of the wearabletechnology, and innovation in the field of body art, the technology has the power to5
transform the skin into a user interface. Wearable technology can therefore be applied asan ink more conveniently. This body art technology has the capability to turn the humanbody into a computerized surface. The designs that are generally used in this type of art areaesthetic that utilizes the geometric body art that are worn by the ancient Egyptians. Thiscan therefore be termed as the modified version of tattoo. This can be considered asfunctional tattoo. The idea of functional tattoo is therefore an extraordinary idea in the fieldof technology, as this has the power to replace the various digital devices such ascontactless payment card. This use of technology is influenced by the Taiwanese culture.This type of body art is known for their simplicity in their design, malleable material andcustomizable designing2. In short, this technology is meant for versatility and classicexample of ink art. Functional tattoos use thinner materials for designing that allows andsupports many different designs and its functionality to use as same interface. This cantherefore be considered as a mixture of artistic and functional use of fashion, art andtechnology.
