Introduction
Engineering Industry in Australia
Engineers can be considered as the backbone of any nation. They have immense
contribution in nation building. Engineering in true sense denotes using of scientific
principles for crafting structures like bridges, roads, buildings, canals, vehicles and many
more. It concentrates on the areas of applied science and applied mathematics (Das, 2015).
Engineering has evolved over the years to cope up with the changing environment and
increase in expectation and demand of human population. Engineering is a wider topic that
covers a wide number of disciplines like Aerospace Engineering that deals with construction
and operation of aircrafts and space shuttles, Agriculture Engineering that deals with
developing and conserving soils and also conservation of water. Biomedical Engineering that
deals with research and development on healthcare products committed towards improving
the life of people. Building services concerned with the development of buildings, lifts,
escalators and many more. Chemical Engineering that deals with changing the raw materials
into finished goods. The industries that uses Chemical Engineering plastic, food, cement,
pharmaceuticals and many more. Food Engineering dealing in food products dedicated in
keeping the lives of the people healthy. Petroleum and petrochemical Engineering that deals
in petroleum products like petrol, diesel, industrial wax and many more. There are other
fields of engineering as well apart from the ones mentioned above like Electrical
Engineering, Civil Engineering, Marine Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering,
Software Engineering and many more.
Australia is a major global market therefore there exists enough demand for the above
mentioned products being produced from the relevant industries (Chandler et al., 2017). This
shows that engineering career in Australia is bright because the industry is expected to even

more in near future as most of the companies operating within the respective engineering
industries are looking to expand their business on a global scale. The engineering sector in
Australia is improving at a faster rate than never before. It one of the five industries like
Healthcare, mining, trade and technology that is showing great signs of improvement.
According to SEEK, this sector got a great boost in 2017 with an increase of around 26%
with an increase of 12000 new jobs or roles. Since then this sector has not stepped down in
growth margin and maintained a consistency in annual growth (Vanhercke et al., 2014). The
aim of this research is to understand the present market scenario of Engineering Industry in
Australia along with a career path to achieve a career path in the field of engineering.
Description
Engineering career in Australia
Engineering discipline is considered as one of the best and highly rated educational
disciplines all over the world, Australia is no exception. It has got numerous educational
institutes that is dedicated in providing quality education students in this discipline like the
University of Sydney, Macquarie University, University of Technology Sydney and many
more. This quality education opens up the gates for future graduates as professional engineers
(Male & Bennett, 2015). There are numerous subparts or disciplines within the broad
category of “Engineering” that offers individual career opportunities. These are discussed
below:
Aerospace Engineering: There are many opportunities for an engineer. In today’s world, the
air traffic has increased manifold and there is a trend that it will enhance even further in near
future (Engineersaustralia.org.au, 2020). This will require numerous engineers from different
fields for both developing the aircraft and also for its operation and maintenance.

Agriculture Engineering: Today the burning issue is population explosion and it requires
massive production of food crops to feed such mammoth population. In order to enhance
production, new varieties of seed has to be designed that yields better production. There is a
lot of scope in this for new graduates in this research field.
Petroleum and Petrochemical Industry: This is such a field where the need for engineers
will not stop till all the crude from earth exhausts (Broadley, 2015). Apart from this the need
for oil is increasing as the society is modernizing more and more so is the demand for
engineers in this field.
Civil Engineering: Civil engineers provides infrastructure for all structures like bridges,
buildings, designing gas and water supply, airport, railways and many more. The construction
will never stop and will increase day-by day and so do the need for Civil engineers.
Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering: Telecommunication engineering deals
with such kind of devices that uses electrical energy for storing, transmitting information and
many more (Engineersaustralia.org.au, 2020). This is an era where everything around us is
electronic right from our smartphone till watch so this field of engineering as well there is
ample scope for new graduates.
Essential skills for a successful career
The two new jobs that one can dream along with essential qualifications needed to
fulfill the minimum requirement of the job are as follows:
Post: Project Engineer
Organization: Transport for NSW
