Technology: Boon or Bane
The day to day activities of life is exposed to technology so it has become an integral part of the
modern day dynamics. There are distinct views among people when asked about technology
being a boon or bane. When some consider it an advantage to our modern society, as it has made
everything accessible easily, while some think that it is ruining the upcoming generation and
making them lazy. My personal point about technology is that it can be beneficial or a stumbling
block depending upon the uses and its application in real life. I think technology is more like a
double edged sword, it can be advantageous and prove to be a life-saving mean but if not utilized
correctly or a little mismanagement may have its own shortcomings. Technology has extended
its branches in almost all sectors like healthcare, telecommunications, banking, e-commerce,
hospitality etc. but one area where I think technology is expanding its capabilities, is the military
sector.
With reference to the article, it has clearly indicated how technology has been able to enhance
the aptitude of the military forces. From a time when battle conflicts were fought with cavalry to
present scenario where unmanned vehicles has taken the charge, technology is proving its
superiority in battle fields and is wielded by every country. With the constant introduction of
new technologies, there is a boom in employment opportunities in the defense sector which is
evident from the fact that in UK, almost 10,000 companies are associated with the defense sector
(Thong & Calvin, 2014). Also, such new technologies also created several options for the
defense leaders to counter the threat related to national security. Threat can take any asymmetric
form and I believe, in order to mitigate the issue technology plays an important role to provide
platter of options to exercise it at the right time.
Having analyzed the article, I have also learned that technological powers also comes with its
corresponding disadvantages. As technology evolves from time to time, it requires rigorous
training of workforce who can adjust to the evolution. Also, this constant evolution of
technology brings another drawback which is the rapid obsolescence of older technology. As
defense sector invest on technology which should last longer, this possess a risk of new threats
which also gets evolved with technology. I have witnessed incidents of some technologies
getting obsolete within no time. For example, the mobile phones and the computers. With new
technology adaption, several logistical problems also needs to be taken care of like the adequacy

of manpower, state of the art infrastructure. This in turn hits the capital investment required
which becomes hefty.
I strongly believe technology can only be as effective as its users. No matter how dependent
people like me and others, become dependent on technology. There will always be human risk
factor associated with it. According to me, to make sure technology turns out to be a boon for the
people, it is important to manage technology effectively by developing a technology roadmap.
Having analyzed the article, I can argue that if there is no planning, it is paramount that
technology will turn out to be a bane which has been showcased in the article.
