Has (or will) technology fundamentally changed human nature, or has it simply enhanced
humanity? Be sure to state what you take to be human nature. Do you think that this
human nature can be replicated in artificial intelligence?
I take human nature to be the intelligence and capabilities to process complex scenarios
and make difficult decisions, have emotions, be able to reason, the ability to learn new concepts,
the ability to see, hear and observe and the ability to recognize speech and translate languages
among other critical aspects
I think that this human nature can be replicated in Artificial Intelligence (AI) as
computers and machines are now able to make complex decisions when given a set of input data,
perform complex computations with incredible speeds and accuracy, analyze big data and
recognize patterns and trends in complex global setups. Artificial intelligence is creating smart
systems that may threaten the existence of human nature. These systems are embedded in our
home applications, vehicles, buildings, and other utilities. Artificial intelligence and the Internet
of Things (IoT) can speed up business processes saving on money and time (Miller 21).
Technology will fundamentally change human nature in both positive and negative ways.
For instance, the implementation of AI in the health care sector has seen the industry grow
significantly in its ability to offer diagnosis, prescribe treatments to patients, and improve the
patients’ treatment plans. Still, in the health sector, AI has significantly contributed to public
health programs, and its application may see these programs capture massive amounts of data
ranging from personal genes, DNA info, and nutrition, among others (Aminzade 10).
However, there are concerns that in the long run, these new technologies, innovations,
and tools may have an impact on the vital aspects of being a human. For instance, there is a
possibility of data abuse and surveillance in smart AI applications designed by companies that
want to profit or governments that want to exercise power. Ethics and human values are not
embedded in smart systems, and yet they provide information for critical decision making. Also,
these smart systems are globally-networked, making it impossible to control them.
