BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF TEMPORARY WORK PROGRAM 2
Temporary work program has been embraced by many people and nations. As asserted
by Nakache and Kinoshita (2010), the number of foreign workers in Canada has increased in the
recent years. The opportunity given to people to work in foreign countries and nations to
accommodate immigrants has brought tremendous developments globally. Developments such as
peace promotion among nations, growth in international trade and intermarriages are some of
visible developments contributed by this program (Castles, 2006). The program involves a
worker moving to another country through an employer. The workers receive a temporary work
permit from the government of the country he is moving in to. Since the program involves
several parties, it is therefore of great importance to understand the benefits and the challenges of
the temporary work program.
The temporary work program has benefited the employers in a manner that there is easy
availability of workers. In some countries, the government has eased the procedures of acquiring
a laborer from a foreign country. For instance, Canadian government has facilitated the increase
of temporary labour migrants for economic reasons (Leonard and Straehle, 2012). This enables
the employer to extensively invest to increase his productivity which directly reflects to high
profits. The high promotion of this program has also enabled employers to secure workers at a
low pay. This helps him to earn more profits since there are less expenses. However, when these
workers are new to the job, the cost of training them is relatively high. This cost is usually
catered for by the employer.
The temporary work program has provided employment to many. Those who take these
jobs are mostly from poor backgrounds and have not secured jobs in their country. This program
therefore creates employment. The worker is in a position to lift the living standards of their
families and also to invest their own countries. The workers also enjoy social benefits such as

medical covers, retirement funds among other benefits. This help the workers to utilize all their
wages for their own good without directing them to emergencies such as illness. However, the
worker may be faced by some challenges in the foreign land. Racism and harassment have been
experienced by many workers. As according to Klonoff and Landrine (2000), black color has
been a marker of discrimination. The workers are ill treated at their places of work by the fact
that they have a black colour. This has discouraged many from taking jobs from foreign
countries.
The government also benefits from this program. The host government enjoy
development in economic status of their country (Reed2008). Increased labour force indicate
increased production. The country therefore is able to produce goods for their own country and
for exports. The host government also is in a position to cater for the development in their
country. For instance, the increased foreigner employment in Canada increased the revenue
obtained from the taxes deducted from the foreigner’s salaries (Gerfin, Lechner and Striger,
2005). To the government from which the foreigner come from, they enjoy high foreign
exchange. This helps the government to cater for its own development. However, the host
government may suffer from increased population (Martin and Teitelbaum, 2001). This happens
when foreign workers obtain permanent work permit.
Finally, this program has led to the economic growth of the globe. By this factor it could
be important for all nations to promote this program and to fight racism so as to encourage many
especially from developing countries to take this job to better their lives and hence a better life
for everyone.
