The Houston Civil Rights Movement Part 1
In the 1960s, Texas residents were challenged by economic injustice whereby
supermarkets were closed to ensure Black Americans could not access shopping services. As per
John Bland in the video, racial discrimination was prevailing in Texas and reforms were needed
to correct injustice issues in Texas. In the video, University students in Texas are seen
demonstrating claiming ‘Houstons Negroes are not satisfied’ because of racial discrimination.
Student movements were organized to advocate for equality, and black students were involved in
demonstrations.
As per the video, University students were involved in strikes to advocate for the end of
racial discrimination. Media helped to address discrimination issues whereby students were
interviewed by journalists to give opinions on racial discrimination in Texas. Therefore, changes
were influenced by Texas University students through strikes and demonstrations. Students
advocated for progress in society after the end of racial discrimination. Racial segregation was
common in the 1960s and students were to actively claim for their rights. The executive arm of
government in Texas was to be involved in revolutionary changes that could end discrimination.
The executive arm of government was to administer civil rights that could promote equality and
fairness in Texas.

The documentary starts with events of Second World War used to explain the essence of
social movements in America. John Trevino in the documentary discusses racial discrimination
that affected Mexican Americans in the 1960s. Individual Texans like Santos Ruiz in 1969
fueled social movements that could end racial discrimination which prevented black Americans

from participating in general elections. Therefore, discrimination in voting rights is described in
the video. May Texans interviewed to express their concern on empowerment whereby youths
needed to participate in elections, and get equal job opportunities. Political activism was to be
controlled by the executive arm of government. With the help of Texas governor, political issues
were discussed, and a solution based on democratic rights was found. Chicano as an American
activist helped Texas Americans to participate in national politics by advocating for individual’s
voting rights in America.
"VIETNAMESE VS. KU KLUX KLAN"
The video was based on refugees discrimination whereby locals in Texas were ignored,
and the federal government provided little support to poor refugees. Refugees were troubled as
they survived in Texas and their activities at the Texas Coast were not benefiting Texas
economy. Foreign refugees were not taught English and could not speak fluently in English.
Texas governors were to help refugees hence the executive arm of government was needed to
intervene on refugees issues. Refugees from Vietnamese explain how they lost important jobs
and needed the government to empower their activities at the port. However, Texas political
leaders claimed refugees were interfering with security and needed to relocate their activities at
the port. Louis Beam in the video explains the need to support refugees and empower their
activities to ensure they develop Texas economy. University students in Texas were to organize
demonstrations to demand fairness and justice in Texas.
