The Egyptian lamp
In the Detroit institute of arts, one of the pieces of art dating around 100 BC is the Egyptian
lamp, a clay ceramic. This lamp was crafted to solve the problem of mysterious absence of lamps
in ancient Egypt[ CITATION MMB70 \l 1033 ][ CITATION Ale74 \l 1033 ]. This innovation was really
important in providing a solution to the absence of lamps in ancient Egypt.
This object was designed by an Egyptian and named the Egyptian lamp. It was designed between
150 and 100 BC in Egypt. The object was excavated at Mendes in the Eastern Nile Delta by the
Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
The Egyptian lamp measures 11/8 by 2 by 27/8 inches. The Egyptian lamp is displayed in a
niche.
The Egyptian lamp was made of locally available Nile silt fabric. Silt was molded into desired
shape and size and the walls were made thick. The base of the pot was flattened in order to

provide balance to prevent toppling. The structure was modelled to create volume to hold the
lamp fuel. The object was low-fired in an oxidizing atmosphere bringing about the red color.
Till the invention of glass, lamp pots made of terracotta remained widely used in ancient Egypt.
The Nut Gatherers
The Nut Gatherers which was originally named Les Noisettes in French is a piece of art in form
of a painting. The painting depicts two girls at the center. The girls possibly went out to gather
nuts, but have taken a rest. The painting displays extreme realism as it depicts the innocence,
beauty and joy that the youth enjoy, as evidenced by these two girls. The painting depicts a dark
background but a lighter foreground. A water body is seen near to the top right edge of the
painting. This piece of art passes a message that childhood and youth passes by quickly and we
should try to capture these passing and precious moments as best as we can[ CITATION Rev03 \l
1033 ][ CITATION JOY08 \l 1033 ]. Transformation into adulthood brings about changes in things
that people do and focus on.
