It discusses two models of reflection, Gibbs Reflective Cycle and Kolb Learning Cycle, and their application in improving patient outcomes. INTRODUCTION
Healthcare professional refers to a person working to treat health problem of different
people in professional manner. It includes different professions such as nursing, physician,
specialist, surgeons, psychiatrist and many more. However, they perform their roles and
responsibilities by cooperating with each other to make an individual disease free (Dressler and
et. al., 2018). In context of this report, it is based on roles of health care professional by
considering deep understanding. This assignment will focus on reflection theories along with
explaining their roles in professional development. It will also includes the specific incident and
implementation of reflective model in that situation. The stages of reflection with the help of
applying particular reflective framework for producing a smart action plan is given here.
TASK 1
Identify and discuss two model or theories of reflection and explain their role in developing
reflective practice.
Reflective practices refers to focus on own way of working and evaluate its effective and
threats to overcome with relevant issues. It includes the criterion of self evaluating own
performance and then focus on it to improve the same. However, the reflective practices much
effective as well as efficient in order to enhance their regular productivity of an individual with
enhancing quality of services. However, a health care professional can apply suitable reflective
models in order to develop their reflective practices in which some of them are given here.
Gibbs Reflective Cycle was primarily developed by Graham Gibbs in the year around
1988 by providing structure of learning from own experiences in more effective way. It includes
to offer an appropriate theory which helps to examine own experiences and given its cycle nature
is responsible to lend itself specifically well in regard to repeated experiences. This permit an
individual to gain learning along with making plan of action from aspects which either went
good or do not go well (Snowdon, 2018). This reflective model is much effective which should
be used by healthcare professionals for improving their reflective practices by following relevant
stages which are explained below.
Description – This includes to proper describe about specific situation of experienced
whether it is positive or negative in detailed manner. It includes to describe overall situation in
which few of questions are required to be answered including the fact that happened and the

place and time of occurring the circumstances. Meanwhile, it consist to defined about the proper
who were present at the place of incident and witness the same. It involves the explain about who
were did what activity during the situation and relevant results happened. Moreover, it is
necessary to describe why who were at the place of incident along with specific reasons for
presenting there.
Feeling – The second of step is to exploring about feelings or thoughts going on in mind
by observing the particular situation and its impact on own experience. It includes to explain own
thoughts about the specific condition and feelings occurring after & before the incident happened
(Wain, 2017). However, it consist to evaluate about thoughts or feelings of other people about
the particular situation. It involves to analyse overall thoughts of everyone about the situation
present there.
Evaluation – This can be described as an action to carry out evaluation of entire situation
happened to identify good and bad aspects of the same. It includes to analyse about the activities
went well and procedures that did not go so well in proper way. However, it is necessary to
determine about self and other's contribution to occurred situation in either positive or negative
manner. It is required to determine that codes of practice and legislations like Equality act, data
protection Act or care act are followed or not.
Analysis – The analysis includes to conduct for a condition to make sense about incident
that happened by focussing on every individual aspect to gather details about the same. It is
favourable to know about what actually happened along with its meaning. However, it includes
target the various prospects which went well or poorly through identifying the related reasons
behind them. However, this can be consider as a natural place where an academic literature can
be included for making sense of the entire incident happened.
Conclusion – In this context, it consist to make conclusion of entire situation in regards
to the situation occurred. It consist to summarise the entire learning and analysis of whole
situation with highlighted points which are responsible to change the action in order to gain an
appropriate improvements in future outcomes (Nicol and Dosser, 2016). However, this action is
required to be a natural response in relation to the previous sections.
Action plan – This includes to establish more effective as well as efficient action plan to
sort out similar incident that had happened earlier. It is helpful to solve similar circumstances in
future and it is very much helpful to think about to act in different manner in order to avoid the

situation occurred previously. However, it is necessary to make sure that such negative incident
should no occur in future for which realisation is enough sometimes but reminders might be
helpful many times.
Kolb Learning Cycle can be defined as a four stage cycle which helps in learning. It was
primarily discovered by David Kolb in the year around 1984 that was developed form the
learning inventory of Kolb. However, it consist cycle of several stages along with different
learning styles which can be used by healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge level
as well as ability. Some of these stages are given below:
Concrete Experience (Feeling): This includes about gathered learning of care
professional for particular experiences along with relating the same with people. It can be
consider to remain sensitive to feelings of another individuals (Oham, Pestano and Allen, 2016).
Reflective observation (Watching): This includes closely observed overall aspects of the
specific situation before establishing any kind of judgement about the same. It includes to
conduct viewing of specific incident from different perspectives by looking at meaning of them
properly.
Abstract conceptualisation (Thinking): This includes to carry out analysis in logical way
in regards to various ideas along with take action on intellectual understanding of occurred
situation.
Active experimentation (Doing): In this context, it has been analysed that it consist to
conducting activities through ability of get things done with the help of influencing individuals
as well as events respectively. It includes the aspects of risk taking for conduct experiment
related to the situation for gaining desired outcomes.
Kolb's learning styles
Diverging (concrete, reflective): This consist the criterion of emphasizing innovative and
imaginative approach to focus on various aspects. It includes to view concrete circumstances
through different perspectives and focus adaptation via observation besides of action (Morley
and et. al., 2017). Meanwhile, it involves to selected interesting individuals and tends about
felling oriented for carry out cooperative activities along with brainstorming.
Assimilating (abstract, reflective): This incudes the election of various type of
observations as well as thoughts into an integrates practice as a whole. It consist to develop

theories and models along reasoning ion an inductive manner. However, it consist the interest
people to develop or design he experiment as well as projects.
Converging (abstract, active): This consist the way of emphasizing the practical
application of developed thoughts or ideas in order to solve issues. It includes to carry out
appropriate decision making as well as problem solving with the help of practically
implementing effective ideas. However, this aspects consist to focus on technical problems rather
than interpersonal issues accordingly.
Accommodating (concrete, active): In context of this aspect, it has been analysed that
errors and trail are used besides of reflection or thoughts by focussing on adaptation of better
prospects for change the situation (Sabater-Galindo and et. al., 2016). It will prefer to focus on
issues to sort out them in an intuitive, trail & errors way which is discovery learning. It is also
helps in tending people to be at ease.
TASK 2

Mrs Belly Brown is 85 years old women admitted in hospital when she was found by her
daughter lying in front of the toilet. He daughter thoughts she was lying overnight there and
patient is diagnosed with right sided stroke which left her with moderate weakness in her left arm
or leg. The problem of vascular dementia is also diagnosed which is overlaid on pre-existing
issue of Alzheimer's diseases. Mrs. Brown has lived alone from past two years as her husband
died following a cardiac arrest. In context of this patient, it is necessary for healthcare
professional to put efforts in proper manner for improving condition of them. During clinical
process, there is conflict occur between nurse and specialist about situation of give patient which
results into delayed services delivery to the patient (Carlsson and et. al., 2016). However, a
reflection model is required to be applied for enhancing reflective practices which impact
positively on treatment outcomes selected patient which is explained further.
Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Description: It is required for me to describe about the occurred situation of given
patient. It includes the condition that an individual lying in front of the toilet which was observed
by her daughter and get admitted to the hospital through the ambulance. However, Mrs. Brown

stay alone form two years as her husband get expired since past two years. It is necessary for
care practitioners to gain knowledge from her daughter about condition of patient to analyse the
entire incident.
Feelings: This involves to discuss own feelings with colleagues about incident occurs
with selected patient. It includes to conduct discussion between physician, nurse and specialist
dealing with stroke about reason behind occurrence of incident with Mrs. Brown. However, it is
very important to analyse various aspects which I consider in order to make decision for initially
treatment by examine the level of weakness of given patient.
Evaluation: In context of this step, it includes to conduct evaluation of entire situation by
identifying the positive or negative aspects in relation to overall occurred circumstance. It is
necessary for healthcare professionals to conduct diagnosis and examine details given daughter
of patient including thoughts to analyse about injuries occur due to fall (Flynn, 2016).
Meanwhile, it includes that weakness in body and stroke is responsible for fall of patient and her
alone living denies about other's contribution the situation.
Analysis: This involves that weakness is responsible for difficulty face by patient to
overcome with her other health problems. It is necessary to deliver proper care to Mrs. Brown
which is suitable to overcome with problem of stroke and dementia along with avoiding
occurrence of similar situation in future. However, the alone situation is responsible for extreme
weak and unconscious condition of patient which requires social interaction with proper care &
treatment to become healthy. My colleagues have a conflict regarding discussion about patient
which impact on decision making and team work.
TASK 3
Outline stages of reflection and apply reflective model along with producing a smart action plan.
Reflective models are required to be used by healthcare professionals in order to evaluate
the their threats of performance for eliminating them, it includes to analyse the issue of working
which can be removed in future clinical procedures. However, it is necessary for every medical
practitioner to enhance their knowledge level and way of working which impact positively on
patient outcomes (Hoff, Sutcliffe and Young, 2016). Moreover, reflective models can be utilised
to produce smart action plan which is defined here.

Gibbs reflection model is helpful to produce a smart action plan because it is favourable
to understand the entire situation to solve the relevant problems. It includes various stages in
which are required to be followed by health care professionals while dealing with different
patient case. Basically, this model contains several stages which are given here. Initially,
description of the particular medical condition of an individual is required including
experiences. Secondly, it includes about feelings where own thoughts and views of others about
specific situation were discussed. Thirdly, the evaluation has been carried out by determining
about aspects related to that condition in either good or bad category. However, analysis consist
to make sense of the situation by considering what happens and reason behind the same.
Meanwhile, conclusion includes about that facts learned by analysing whole situation and
method to be used for performing in different way for avoiding specific negative circumstances
in future. Moreover, action plan consist make decision to deal with the occurred situation by
making desired changes for future improvements (Baur, van Nistelrooij and Vanlaere, 2017).
Additionally, the conflicts occurs between my colleagues create an issue which impact
negatively on clinical outcomes and condition of patient. It is necessary to overcome with
conflicts and develop mutual understanding for delivering appropriate care services for welfare
of patients. The smart produced through reflective model are given here.
 The advanced technology should be adopted to facilitate proper communicate to share
accurate information among staff members within next 3 months.
 Effective training programs should be organised within a month to improve skills of
employees to perform with cooperation.
 It is required to establish knowledgeable programs in next 15 days which improve ability
to solve issues quickly.
 The improvement of communication should be done among colleagues by implementing
policies of communicating information in clear & concise way.
CONCLUSION
From the above report, it has been concluded that health profession should focus on
reflective practices which helps to improve patient outcomes. It include to utilise Gibbs'
reflection model and Kolb's learning theory for enhancing knowledge for achieving better
outcomes in future.
