The History of Modern Dance

Martha Graham was an iconic dancer who changed the concept of dance through her expressive movement of the human body. She established her own dancing academy and taught a group of young enthusiasts who later moved to several well-known dance companies. Her distinctive choreography style prioritized on the basic movements of the human body, especially focusing on movements of release and contraction. She encouraged her students and co-artists to incorporate movements strongly inclined towards human emotions. Her famous work, 'The Flute of Krishna', explored the emotion of love while paying homage to Lord Krishna. Graham used the concept of 'contraction and release' to give a more enhanced effect to the dancing and made use of all body parts in different styles to create a dramatic effect.
