ABSTRACT
Dementia is considered as a disease in which the person loses its ability to think, analyse
and understand what is happening around them. The symptoms of dementia throw a wide impact
on the physical as well as mental ability of the individual affecting the basic and daily routine
activities of the individual. In case of older adults, the issue of dementia seems to have a large
impact affecting the functions of life and causing various complications such as depression, loss
of memory. The whole research has been conducted with the aim of analysing the impact of
dementia on older adults and has been successfully achieved with the help of different themes
made on the basis of information collected from articles. Both primary and secondary articles
have been analysed for conducting the whole study. Therefore, it has been analysed that with a
proper amount of support from family members and care givers, older adults can be provided an
efficient amount of care in order to provide relief from the symptoms of dementia.

CHAPTER 1 :INTRODUCTION
1.1 Overview
Dementia is considered as a brain disease in which the person usually has to suffer from
various symptoms throwing an impact on the basic functioning of life. The ability of a person to
think and understand things decreases to a high extent and also, there may be signs of a
minimized level of confidence as well. There are enormous number of symptoms that the person
may have to face because of dementia and a very basic example of this can be considered as the
troubles that the individual have to face about what is happening around them, their capability of
thinking and understanding decreases to a huge extent. In dementia, the person even forgets what
they have done before a few minutes.
So, these symptoms have a huge influence on mental stability of the person and therefore,
it can also be referred as a cause for causing much interference in basic activities and functions
of life. The effects of dementia go severe from time to time and go quite worse in case of older
adults. Also, dementia is considered as one of the leading causes for death as well. Although,
there are various treatments available for it but still, there is no proper cure (Donegan, Fox and
Burns, 2017). The treatments available can help in providing a sort of relief to the symptoms of
people dealing with dementia. In case of older adults, dementia is classified as a common issue.
The report is about analysing the influence of dementia on older adults. An actual reason why
dementia happens is that when the brain undergoes a range of strokes, it influences cells of brain
badly. Also, Alzheimer's disease is considered as another example responsible for causing
dementia. Older people suffering from dementia and the people who are involved in providing
care to them are said to have an involvement in social care practices.
Determining and understanding the needs and requirements of people who are suffering
from dementia is very important because older adults are usually going through various other
issues and because of dementia, they forget even small and basic things also. So, being patient
and supportive with them can actually help in providing better rate of care to them. In providing
support to the older people dealing with dementia, family, friends and guardians play an
important role. It is because; there might be the possibility that they forget things, seem less
capable of analysing what is going in their surroundings, etc. So, it can be quite frustrating for
the ones providing care to them but fact that is important to be ensured here is that it is very
important to deal with them in an effective manner with proper love, care and support so that

family and friends, the same can be provided from practitioners and social care workers having
high level of knowledge and skills.
There can be various ways and approaches included in order to provide support to the
people dealing with dementia. There has been various cases observed where some factors are
responsible for not providing an efficient amount of care such as lack of care from families end
etc., and these can further lead to various further complications as well. It is obvious that the
older ones dealing with dementia undergo memory loss and other complications. In that situation
also, if the family members will not be able to provide an appropriate rate of support to them, it
can affect badly on their mental stability. Therefore, this can cause further complications and
also lead the person in depression. Therefore, there is an immediate need of focusing on these
factors so that an efficient amount of preventive measures can be taken in order to control these
issues and complications.

CHAPTER 2 : METHODOLOGY
2.1 Introduction
Research methodology is the second chapter which covers all the aspects that are
required for an effective collection of information to be used within research. It will also include
a proper search strategy that will be used for the collection of resources along with inclusion and
exclusion criteria. The chapter also involves different methods, ways and strategies for analysing
the information in a more efficient manner.
2.2 Search strategy
The search strategy is considered as a way of searching out relevant articles that can
seem to be suitable for carrying out this research. Key terms can also be used for having more
appropriate search results. In this research, PRISMA search strategy can be used for
investigating about the suitable literature. It is because; PRISMA can be considered as one of an
effective ways because it includes a few steps that can help in reaching till the suitable and
relevant articles (Banerjee, 2015). There are various steps involved in PRISMA strategy and
these include identification, screening and eligibility of the articles.

2.3 Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria is considered as the way in which elements that can act suitable for
research are being included whereas in case of exclusion criteria, elements that are not efficient
enough and are unsuitable because of some reasons can be excluded from the list. It is
considered as an effective way that can help in reaching at the articles that can actually help in
making quality of research effective. As shown in the above PRISMA diagram, some articles
were excluded on some basis and the rest of them were kept for further use. A total of 40 articles
were collected. After the duplicates were removed, a total of 15 articles were there. From
analysing these 15 articles, some were old and not acting suitable enough for the present

total of 5 articles were selected that can be used for further analysis in the literature review.
2.4 Analysis of secondary data
From a variety of articles gathered after a proper investigation, it has been analysed that a
wide information has been gathered from statistical and tabular form which makes this a
quantitative study. Also, a wide variety of articles is gathered from online sources and by means
of interviews as well. Therefore, this can be considered that the researcher has used primary as
well as secondary data to be used in research.
2.5 Ethical issues
Ethical considerations are considered as the factors that help researcher to analyse in a
way that they can be able to decide what to approve and what not (Surr, Smith and Robins,
2016). This can be done on basis of what is suitable and what not as per requirements of the
research. It is important because this is being analysed for investigating the consequences of
actions. So, in this research as well, researcher will consider efficiently the factors that are
necessary to be included in this study and what are not.

CHAPTER 3 : LITERATURE REVIEW
3.1 Introduction
This chapter covers an overview of the basic objectives that are having an influence on
factors associated with dementia in case of older adults. Different themes collected from various
secondary articles can be used in an efficient way to make the whole research clear enough. The
literature review will include various aspects associated with impact of dementia on older adults.
So, the review will also cover different causes along with proper interventions that can be taken
in order to control these complications and problems.
3.2 Support for older people dealing with dementia
According to Dewing and Dijk (2014), there is a kind of difference in between the way in
which care is being provided in centres and in home. A basic factor that is to be ensured here is
that an appropriate rate of care should be provided to the older people who are suffering from
dementia. Whether it is about support that is being provided by family members or friends, they
should also consider the fact that person might already be suffering from mental disability and
other issues. So, they must be requiring an efficient amount of care. So, in such situations, it is
better to deal with an appropriate level of patience. It is because; any sort of mis-behave or
disrespectful behaviour can actually hurt their sentiments and have a negative impact on their
mental stability.
In comparison to the care provided by family members, friends, etc., if the person is
being admitted to care centres, then it is important to ensure that the social workers or other
practitioners are aware of methods that are important such as a proper way to talk to the adult
suffering from dementia. It is because; these small factors effect the mental condition of person.
Social circumstances also play an important role which includes what is going around the person.
Therefore, the family members, care workers, etc. can ensure to provide a happier and healthier
environment so that person suffering from dementia can stay free from tensions. Social workers
can engage with the family members and friends of the person suffering from dementia because
they tend to provide support to them to a high extent. It is very important because in such
situations, often the family members and friends need some sort of support.
In contradiction to this, Daniel (2017) said that depression because of dementia, in older
adults, can have a huge influence on the routine and basic activities of an individual. So,

involvement of interventions at an early basis is very important because these symptoms go
complex from time to time and in case of adults, this can increase the chances of other
complexities and features as well and that too at a huge extent. Therefore, pre interventions are
important to be included so that the person can have a sort of relief from its symptoms. However,
it can be evaluated that even at the time of early signs of dementia, family members, friends, etc.
should ensure that they provide better rate of care and support to them so that it can act as a sigh
of relief from a few symptoms of the same.
3.3 Social work practice for older adults with dementia
According to Stephen (2018), there are some issues that act to be responsible for not
providing dementia patients an appropriate care in the social care homes. For some people who
cannot afford treatment of dementia, it is quite difficult for them to pay accommodation costs
along with that of treatment required. Although, with the help of support from the government
of UK, there have been some benefits for people dealing with dementia who cannot afford these
monetary costs. In contradiction to this, Lyn (2017) said that in case of person centred care being
provided to the dementia patients, social work practices play an important role.
It is because; the carers involved should be aware of fact that these older adults are
already dealing with dementia and so, they must be suffering from various symptoms of it like
memory loss, unable to understand what is going around, etc. So, in such situations, it is very
important that all carers should be aware of fact that how they should deal and talk with them,
etc. It is because; they are already not mentally stable. So, if in such case, they will face any sort
of mis-behave or ill behaviour, it can directly have an impact on their mental condition. So, to
avoid such complications, it is very important that social care workers should stay aware of the
ways they should behave with older adults dealing with dementia (Roberts, Green and Welsh-
Bohmer, 2017).
It is because; this type of behaviour can have a direct impact on them and also, it can
raise various further complications. It also keeps a wide focus on some factors such as
interaction, relationships, etc. It is important; for making person comfortable and also decreasing
their stress level, it is very important that their family members or friends as well as guardians
make an effective interaction with them. It is because; they do not forget anything deliberately;
these are the symptoms of dementia that decrease their memory and understanding power. They
can become a victim of depression as well. Therefore, for avoiding the effect of such issues, it is

better that the supporters, family members and care workers tend to provide an efficient amount
of support to them. Also, to deal with patience is another important factor which is to be
considered while dealing with the adults suffering from dementia. It also considers another
important factor, the decision making.
It is because; as per Lyn (2017), if there will be an effective decision making process in
between members of family, then they all can focus on way they should deal with the person
suffering from dementia. Whether it is about the emotional support or maintaining mental
balance, family members play an important role. Therefore, if there will be an appropriate
decision making in between the family members, the probability of increasing complications will
decrease to a high extent. So, this can be termed as a way of providing support to the older adults
dealing with dementia and also this can act as a strengthening measure to be adopted for having
successful and positive responses. However, it can be evaluated that considering the issues that
are being faced by the adults with dementia Is important enough so that proper preventive
measures can be taken effectively.
3.4 Impact of drugs and medications prescribed for adults with dementia
According to Janet and et.al (2016), although there is no specified treatment that ensures
the prevention of dementia but there can be involvement of various medications and treatments
that can help in providing some relief from the symptoms of it. It is because; the adults dealing
with dementia must not be capable of understanding what is happening around them and also
faces depression. This is the reason; they can take prescribed medications in order to get some
relief. Antipsychotic medications and drugs usually act helpful so that some symptoms can be
managed. But in the year 2009, there have been some warnings that there were some issues on
the dosage of these drugs. As per the statistics, some people were taking a higher dosage
amount of these drugs and due to which, their bodily complications were increasing day by day.
This was the reason for initiating the limitations. Also, after that, it was actually observed that
there was a reduction in the usage of these drugs. This was also considered as an effective
approach which forced the scientists to develop some other ways and approaches that can be
used to cure dementia.
In contradiction to this, as per Richard (2018), there are enormous types of medications
and drugs that can be prescribed to older adults dealing with dementia but there are some issues
associated with it. This is because; it has been observed that many of these drugs have some
9
of support to them.
This is because; it has been observed that many of these drugs have some
9
complications such as some have a small amount of effect whereas, some influences the flow of
blood and other factors. Therefore, some tools can be used for measuring the effectiveness of
medications and drugs so that on this basis, it can act to be feasible enough to choose the drug or
medication that can act effective for providing relief. There is a possibility that medical
treatment may also involve various advanced features that can help the older adults to have an
improvisation in the behavioural changes to a high extent.
There are various therapies and factors adding up in the process of medical treatment so
that an improvement can be observed within people dealing with dementia. Along with
therapies, different inhibitors can also be included by dementia patients but there are some
specific guidelines that are needed to be ensured. A well-known example of this can be
considered as the fact that people dealing with any sort of allergy or issues associated with liver
should not use inhibitors because these can actually have a negative impact instead of having a
positive one. Therefore, these factors can be considered for having a sort of improvisation in
symptoms to older people dealing with dementia.
For providing an efficient amount of treatment to Alzheimer's symptoms also, there has
been a special category of drugs that have been approved by FDA. Even in various cases as well,
it has been notified that they have observed a significant improvement in some activities of their
daily routine such as they are able to eat well and also they seem quite interested in what is
happening around. These drugs are classified as N methyl D aspartate blockers. Although there
are some precautions to be taken in this case also because these drugs react with some categories
of medications. Therefore, the person should ensure that an efficient gap will remain between
these doses. Depression is one of the well known symptoms of dementia. So, this might be
obvious that the older adults will be dealing with a huge amount of depression as well. So, for
coping with such events, there are anti depressant drugs that can help these adults to cope with
the changes.
3.5 Impact of dementia on physical health
According to Dewing and Dijk (2016), there are various factors that can get affected by
dementia, specially the mental and physical health of a person. The older adults with dementia
are more probable to suffer from depression. It is because this stops the brain and its cells to
work properly. Therefore, it leads the person in depression. So, it can be said that dementia
influences the mental health of a person very badly. Also, the ability to concentrate and

understand things decreases to a huge extent. So, the overall mental stability gets affected by a
huge extent. Along with the mental pressure and issues, these adults can also face various
physical issues as well. Some well known examples can be considered as the fact that the older
adults might be facing issues with swallowing, lack of appetite, loss of control over bowel
movements etc. It is because in such cases, the adults usually loses the control over bowel
movements, do not wish to take food etc. So, it can act much complex and complicated for the
older adults. It also focuses on the fact that although these factors are quite difficult for the
person with dementia, it seems equally difficult for the ones who are connected such as family
members, friends etc. It is because the person is somehow wholly dependent on the near ones as
they usually go through loss of memory, depression and they even sometimes forget that what
they have done before a few minutes (Wolff, Spillman and Kasper, 2016). Therefore, this is quite
heartbreaking for the family members as well. But the fact that is to be ensured here is that the
older adults suffering from dementia must be requiring an efficient amount of support and it is
important as well because this helps them in staying happy. Also, by this way, they will feel open
enough and will become able enough to share what they are feeling. This will help in making a
better interaction between the person and family members and it will help in analysing the basic
issues more clearly so that they can be resolved as soon as possible.
In comparison to this, as per Banerjee (2015), sometimes there comes a time when the
family members of the adults dealing with dementia have to request for the care from care
homes. It is because as per the study, providing care and support to the person dealing with
dementia in home is quite difficult. As there are family members and other loved ones in home,
it can be considered as a quite hear breaking situation for them when the person with dementia
behaves in an odd way. A very common example of this can be considered as the fact that
usually the older adults suffering from dementia face loss of memory etc., so they don't even
sometimes remember that what they have done before a few minutes. So, such complex factors
somewhere acts as an increment in the probability of the last few times of that person. Therefore,
for avoiding such factors, sometimes, the family members prefer to shift the person to care home.
The adults dealing with dementia can actually act weird sometimes and also, the depression can
reflect on their vocabulary. Although they do not do it deliberately but still, they have to face
these complications. So, when the situations seems losing control, it is better to shift the person
to care homes because this helps in avoiding any further complications and any more stress.

Hiring a care giver can also be considered as an appropriate option because they can be able to
provide the adult an efficiency in care as well as support. Also, by this way, the person can be

CHAPTER 4 : FINDINGS, ANALYSIS AND REFLECTIVE CRITIQUE
4.1 Introduction
Data analysis, findings and presentation is next chapter after literature review that will be
covering all the information that has been gathered by the researcher. The collected and analysed
data will be covered within this chapter. Therefore, the forte of analysing each information that is
collected is that the researcher can reach to a conclusion.
4.2 Support and care for older adults with dementia
As per the research, usually, it has been observed that the older adults dealing with
dementia prefer families care and support more than that of the amount of care being provided
from social care workers. It is because family members tends to take care of very basic and
routine life activities. Although family members can also provide appropriate care to the person
suffering from dementia. It is because they stay with the person, so they are more probable to
provide better care services to the person. Whether it is in terms of providing better food or in
bathing etc. Social carers can tend to provide an efficient quality of services and support to the
person because they have enormous ways and also, they are aware of techniques, therapies that
can help the dementia person. As they are experienced, so there is a higher probability that they
can treat better than family members and other near ones (Dementia guide, 2018). However, in
comparison with the literature review, there comes a time when family members themselves
have to refer to social care services. It is because the person dealing with dementia suffers from
enormous number of issues such as depression, memory loss and many more. So, for family
members and near ones, it is quite difficult to see this type of situation. So, some family
members prefer social care workers and supporters so that they can provide them an efficient
quality of care and services (Banerjee, 2015).
Whether it is in terms of bathing, food and other basic activities of daily life, social carers
can provide them better support. However, it can be evaluated that social care workers can help
in providing an appropriate rate of support because they involve various techniques and methods
for providing support. Some well known examples can be considered as treatments like
physiotherapy, language therapy etc. As in case of dementia, the adults often feels unable to
speak because they forget what they were about to speak. So, for that also, there are various
language therapies that can be provided by the help of social care workers only. Although the

family members have a soft corner for the person suffering from dementia but it is an obvious
fact that they must not be aware of various techniques and ways that can help the person in
getting some relief from its symptoms. Therefore, it can be evaluated that the social care workers
can help more efficiently because they are well aware of the treatments and procedures that can
help the adult dealing with dementia. Although love, care and support from family members is
required and is essential as well but along with that, an efficiency in treatment procedures is a
must and should be given more priority so that the person suffering from dementia can be able to
get over the symptoms and can cope with them. This can prove much beneficial for the older
adults in coping up with the symptoms. Also, when they will stay engaged in different processes,
it will somewhere help them to feel better. The social carers can also make sure to interact with
the person because this can help them to open up and by this way, they will also share what they
are actually going through. This will further help in making the whole process of treatment
smooth enough.
4.3 Services provided by NHS UK
As per the research, there are enormous number of services provided by National health
services, UK and some well known examples include emergency call services, immediate
appointments with the general practitioner, urgent care provision etc. These services have been
implemented by the government of UK in order to provide a sort of support to the ones who are
suffering from dementia (NHS services explained, 2018). It is because it has been observed in
various cases that there is some immediate need of treatment or there is some urgent case, at that
time, because of the delay in providing care to the patient, the person has to go through major
complications. So, for avoiding such delays in providing care, the national health services of UK
have involved a variety of operations by which they can be able to provide the older adults,
enormous number of services that can prove beneficial. Some very popular services involve Call
NHS 111, Call 999 and many more. A variety of services are involved in the processes initiated
by NHS such as pharmacy related, dental, mental health and many more. So, the family members
of the adults dealing with dementia can refer to these services. Although a wide variety of
services are completely free of cost, so this can act beneficial for the ones who cannot afford
costly treatments and procedures. The literature review also suggested that older adults dealing
with dementia suffer from enormous number of problems such as depression. So, it becomes
quite difficult for family members also to control the situation sometimes (Dewing and Dijk,

2016). Therefore, in such case, the family members can also refer to various services provided by
NHS because it involves a variety of services and techniques that can actually help the adults to
cope with various symptoms. Although the care from family members cannot be compared with
any other factor but taking help from medical support can act more effective because it is
obvious that the practitioners are experienced enough, so they can provide an efficient quality of
services and care to the adults dealing with dementia.
Therefore, with the help of various treatments and services provided by NHS, one can be
able to achieve a success rate in getting some sort of relief from its various symptoms. This will
also help to provide some relief to the family members also because in such cases, they can
ensure that the person is within appropriate hands and with the help of different preventive
measures, it can seem easy enough to cope with various symptoms and troubles associated with
dementia. This can be even classified as a positive factor for family members of the individual
because in case of care provided by care givers, they can even ensure that it involves proper
preventive measures and precautions so that there is no chance of any further complexity or
trouble. However, in comparison with literature review, there are some drugs that can cause few
complications for the person with dementia. It is because in some cases, it has observed that
some medications react with others (Richard, 2018). Therefore, before the intake of any
medication or drug to the adult with dementia, it is very important to go through the regulations
so that no medications can react and lead to any further complications. Therefore, even after
discharge of the person from NHS, family members should ensure the regulations from
practitioners very carefully so that no further complication can rise.
4.4 Older adults should receive an efficient quality of care
According to the research, a fact that is to be ensured is the older adults should receive an
efficient amount and quality of support and care. It is because there are various troubles and
issues associated with the diseases. The older adults who are suffering from dementia usually
have to face various complications such as depression, loss of memory, difficulty in analysing
and understanding various things that are going around them etc. So, these symptoms make the
situation complex to an extent that it seems quite unbearable sometimes (What is Dementia,
2018). Also, there is a probability that the person don't even remember what they have performed
a few minutes back. So, such factors makes things more complex. Therefore, it is very important
to ensure that an appropriate quality of preventive measures should be involved so that the older

to ensure that an appropriate quality of preventive measures should be involved so that the older

adults with dementia can have an efficient and standard quality of treatment. There are some
signs that can help in predict that the person is suffering from dementia, so while analysing some
of them, family members and guardians should ensure to take it seriously enough so that an
immediate treatment can be provided to the person. This can help in controlling the situation to a
huge extent. Providing immediate treatment is very important because if these symptoms are not
taken seriously, it leads to various other complications such as thyroid and some drugs also
throw a negative impact on their body and functions. Therefore, it is very important to consider
the factors and provide treatment to the older adults dealing with dementia as soon as possible.
Also, the literature review suggested that care can be provided to the patient, even in home or in
social care centre as well (Dewing and Dijk, 2014). The only difference is that the condition of
the person is not bearable for family sometimes whether the care givers are aware of various
therapies and treatments that can help the person to cope with different symptoms of dementia.
Therefore, it can be considered that along with the care and support of family members, these
older adults can also be provided with treatments and therapies with the help of care givers
because they are aware enough of techniques that can help in resolving some probability of the
symptoms. The combination of both can actually prove helpful enough so that the adults with

stability and ability of a person to think and understand. It's a mental disease in which people
generally forgets even the small things. The level of confidence and self dependency is
decreased. How the old adults are greeting effected by this mental disorders have been described
stated here with their sign and symptoms. This present study that has been described here is
dealing with a clear aim to give support to all those old people who are suffering from dementia.
This has been described here by dividing it into several chapters.
The first chapter has been included with its overview, research questions, aims and
objectives in which the symptoms of dementia with their influence and negative impact on older
adults have been stated here. Analysis with its causing factors and preservatives measures to
control this mental degeneration have been depicted. The aim was to analyse the impact of
dementia on older adults and it has been successfully achieved with all the informations
gathered.
The second chapter has been able to show all research methodology and research aspects
that are dealing with several search strategies, inclusion and exclusion criteria with their ethical
issues. These all measures have been taken to provide a comfortable and supportive environment
to the dementia patients. All the aspects of research methodology have been used for the
successful achievement of the aim.
The third chapter has been entitled here with different supportive measures that is being
taken for the people who are dealing with this mental disorder. Along with this all the social
work practices and medications that are being used to make them cure have been described in
this context. The different types of negative impact of dementia on physical health has also been
included here.
The fourth chapter of this dissertation is data analysis and findings that actually helped in
evaluating the information that has been gathered by means of various articles. Some articles
were consisting of primary data and some were consisting of secondary data. Different themes
have been made in accordance with the articles found and the same have been compared and
contrasted with the themes achieved in the literature review.

influence of dementia on older adults. So, there are enormous number of procedures, treatments
available that can be involved in order to provide the dementia patients an efficiency of care and
support. It also involves the comparison of the care being provided by family with that of the
social carers. There are enormous number of ways and treatments that can prove helpful enough
in resolving the issues associated with dementia. Involvement of proper preventive measures has
been taken in order to control the symptoms and side effects of dementia in case of older adults.
