CHAPTER 1 :INTRODUCTION1.1 OverviewDementia is considered as a brain disease in which the person usually has to suffer fromvarious symptoms throwing an impact on the basic functioning of life. The ability of a person tothink and understand things decreases to a high extent and also, there may be signs of aminimized level of confidence as well. There are enormous number of symptoms that the personmay have to face because of dementia and a very basic example of this can be considered as thetroubles that the individual have to face about what is happening around them, their capability ofthinking and understanding decreases to a huge extent. In dementia, the person even forgets whatthey have done before a few minutes. So, these symptoms have a huge influence on mental stability of the person and therefore,it can also be referred as a cause for causing much interference in basic activities and functionsof life. The effects of dementia go severe from time to time and go quite worse in case of olderadults. Also, dementia is considered as one of the leading causes for death as well. Although, there are various treatments available for it but still, there is no proper cure (Donegan, Fox andBurns, 2017). The treatments available can help in providing a sort of relief to the symptoms ofpeople dealing with dementia. In case of older adults, dementia is classified as a common issue. The report is about analysing the influence of dementia on older adults. An actual reason whydementia happens is that when the brain undergoes a range of strokes, it influences cells of brainbadly. Also, Alzheimer's disease is considered as another example responsible for causingdementia. Older people suffering from dementia and the people who are involved in providingcare to them are said to have an involvement in social care practices. Determining and understanding the needs and requirements of people who are sufferingfrom dementia is very important because older adults are usually going through various otherissues and because of dementia, they forget even small and basic things also. So, being patientand supportive with them can actually help in providing better rate of care to them. In providingsupport to the older people dealing with dementia, family, friends and guardians play animportant role. It is because; there might be the possibility that they forget things, seem lesscapable of analysing what is going in their surroundings, etc. So, it can be quite frustrating forthe ones providing care to them but fact that is important to be ensured here is that it is veryimportant to deal with them in an effective manner with proper love, care and support so that1

they can also feel open enough to share their feelings (Terracciano, Stephan and Sutin, 2018).This will also act as a sort of relaxation therapy to them. Along with social care and support fromfamily and friends, the same can be provided from practitioners and social care workers havinghigh level of knowledge and skills. There can be various ways and approaches included in order to provide support to thepeople dealing with dementia. There has been various cases observed where some factors areresponsible for not providing an efficient amount of care such as lack of care from families endetc., and these can further lead to various further complications as well. It is obvious that theolder ones dealing with dementia undergo memory loss and other complications. In that situationalso, if the family members will not be able to provide an appropriate rate of support to them, itcan affect badly on their mental stability. Therefore, this can cause further complications andalso lead the person in depression. Therefore, there is an immediate need of focusing on thesefactors so that an efficient amount of preventive measures can be taken in order to control theseissues and complications. 1.2 Aims and Objectives AimThe aim of the research is “To analyse the influence of dementia on older adults andvarious ways to prevent it.”Objectives To examine the symptoms and impact of dementia. To determine the influence of dementia on older adults.
