Chapter 1: Introduction
1.0 Overview
The success of the business organizations is not due to the effort and dedication of an
individual employee but the combined effort and hard work of all the employees working for the
business organization. Therefore, no little effort of the employees should be left unrecognized
and unappreciated. According to Hanaysha (2016), business organizations should ensure and
promote team work because the collaborative effort of the employees helps in achieving
common goal, completing tasks with quality, ensuring timely delivery and increased
productivity. This is because the employees can work as a team peacefully by helping each other
and showing higher level of co-operation, support and co-ordination.
As commented by Agarwal and Adjirackor (2016), each organization regardless of their size
struggles for acquiring productivity in order to ensure success and achieve a valuable image and
position in the market. Additionally, issues with productivity raise questions in terms of the
competitive advantage of the business organizations. However, as argued by Hanaysha and Tahir
(2016), the population of the employees within business organizations might vary but it has
nothing to do with organizational productivity. The organizational productivity is questioned due
to lack of team work within business organizations. Inadequate and lack of team work within
business organizations highlights the inability of coordinating works into groups that delay
achieving goals and objectives and failure in delivering on time and with quality (Fay et al.
2015).

1.1 Problem statement
As workplace is a highly diversified place where different individuals or employees
come together and work and teams for achieving organizational goals and objectives, issues are
evident that results in ineffective team work and hampers the productivity of the organization.
One of the main issues that results in ineffective team work is communication. Communication
among the employees of business organizations might be disruptive and awful due to personal
conflicts, difference in beliefs and behavior that disturbs the flow of the work. As a result,
coherency and co-ordination among the employees and their work are not noticed that affects
organizational productivity negatively (Delmas and Pekovic 2018). Communication issues
restrict the individuals within team to listen to others thereby, resulting in conflicts and
differences within the team. As a result, ineffective team work is noticed as none of the team
members are ready to talk it out and share relevant and important information (Von Bonsdorff et
al. 2015).
Another issue that results in ineffective team work and hampers organizational
productivity is lack of appropriate leadership and leadership styles. Working as team signifies
different ability of the team members to understand and perceive things. As a result, it is

necessary to make clear goals and objectives to the team members so that they can plan and
strategize accordingly. Lack of adequate leadership skills restricts the team members to develop
a vision and clarity regarding their goals and objectives that affects their ability to plan and
strategize accordingly. As a result, the team members are unable to work cohesively and lacks
co-operation due to which desired results are not obtained thereby, affecting organizational
productivity negatively (Zincirkiran, Emhan and Yasar 2015). Inadequate leadership skills also
restricts in identifying the strengths and weakness of the team members while allocating roles
and responsibilities that affects organizational productivity. The team members are unable to
perform the roles and responsibilities assigned to them and cannot ask for help from team
members due to existing communication issues. As a result, lack of unity is noticed that hampers
the overall organizational productivity negatively (Solaja, Idowu and James 2016).
