Introduction
Homelessness refers to living in the housing which is below the minimum standard
and lacks the secure tenure. The people can be referred to as homeless in the event of living
on the streets or moving in between temporary shelters. It results on account of various kinds
of social along with the economic factors. The people who are homeless live in the dwelling
which is inadequate and they do not have adequate access to space for carrying out social
relations. They live in the non-conventional accommodation which does not enable them in
leading a secured life. In the year 2016, around 116,000 people were thought of to be
homeless in Australia of whom 58 % were male, 21 5 were of the age 25-34 and around 20 %
were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians (Aihw.gov.au., 2020). It was found
that approximately 51,000 of the people were living within the framework of crowded
dwellings and more than 21,000 had been living in the supported accommodation which was
meant for the homeless people. This report throws light on the issue of homelessness in
Australia and how it is related to the social disadvantage of the people. This report discusses
about the present and the past interventions pertaining to homelessness in Australia. This
report talks about the strategies that have been taken by the governments that have helped in
the eradication of the homelessness in the Australian society.
Homelessness in Australia
The issue of homelessness is of crucial importance in Australia as the access to secure
housing falls under the ambit of basic human rights of the people. Homelessness is indicative
of lack of the connectedness with the family and friends that can prove to be injurious for the
mental condition of an individual. They do not have the control over the environment which
proves to be detrimental for the mental state of an individual. He is deprived of right to
education and right of privacy which makes him face the challenges in the functioning in the
