The Pastoral Epistles
Your reading for this session consists of the Pastoral Epistles (1,2 Timothy; Titus) and
Chapter 7 in your Textbook.
Write in your answers in the spaces provided.
1. Though the Pastoral Epistles deal at times with theology and contain some great
doctrinal statements, they are mainly practical. Paul gives counsel on such things as
thequalificationof church officers, the proper way to conduct publicworship, the
treatment of various groups within the church, and the best way to deal with
falseteaching. These three letters belong to the period at the close of Paul’s life.
2. As they stand, the biographical details in the Pastoral Epistles cannot be fitted into the
framework of the narrative in the Book of the actsnarrative. Paul's movements
reflected in these Epistles must, therefore, have occurred after his
imprisonmentmentioned in Rome (cf Acts 28:16-31). This means, then, that he was
releasedand was involved in further activity in the eastern Mediterranean. 2 Timothy is
best understood as having been written during a second easternMediterraneanin Rome
(2 Timothy 1:16,17; 2:9).

perversion of the Christian faith?
In order to avoid stop false teaching, they recommend supervising the public worship
and appointment to the church leaders.
h) List the things Timothy is told to do and to avoid in order to be ‘a good
minister of Christ Jesus’ (4:6-16

d) The qualifications for an elder (or overseer) given here (1:6-9) are
comparable with those given at 1 Timothy 3:1-7. List the qualifications given
here.
There is different kind of qualification are required such as humanity, mankind,
honesty, faith, love, and respect.
e) Chapter 2:1-10 contains instructions governing the conduct of various groups
within the Christian community:

f) Having outlined the conduct he wants to see in believers, Paul goes back to the
basis of it all (2:11-15).
i) What effect is ‘the grace of God’ intended to have on believers’ conduct
(vv 12,13)?According to author effect, the grace of God is basically that if people
build up their faith on God and also faith in the mankind then the effect must be
well. If the dishonesty and the positivity change then the effect of mankind is not
that great.
ii) What is Titus’ responsibility (v 15)?
Titus responsibility was that he needs to make a test case and successfully

g) What obligations do we have to the State and to people generally (3:1,2)?
The obligation of people generally has the trust issue and loyalty, humanity etc.
h) What twofold awareness about ourselves should inspire such conduct (3:3-
7)?
The two-fold awareness about the positivity, believe in themselves, belief in god.
i)____Chapter 3:4-7 is Paul’s second classic summary of Christian doctrine in this
letter (cf 2:11-14).
