Before a discussion about the fact as to why the ninety five thesis written by Martin Luther is considered to be controversial, it is very crucial to know who he was. Born on November 10th, 1483, Martin Luther was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, monk and a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation. He was one of the most prominent controversialperson in the history of Christianity. One of the most sought after work was the ninety five thesis which he wrote on October 31, 1517 out of anger over Pope Leo X who introduced an entire new immoderations for the building up of the St. Peter’s Basilica. The document written by Luther focussed upon the dishonest and the shady practices of selling indulgences so as to pardon and get rid of felony. The 95 thesis basically highlighted two important beliefs, one was that Bible is the ultimate and that individuals on earth can attain ‘moksha’ only by their faith and not by such extravagant deeds. The thesis was full of disagreement simply because it was a document which was only criticising the indulgences into which people were asked to get into in order to relieve themselves from any sin. It also mentioned and hit the emotional side of the St. Peter’s Scandal wherein Martin Luther has questioned Pope as to why doesn’t he use his personal wealth rather than demanding the same from the poor when his own wealth is much more than the richest of the people in Germany1. His writings were disagreed upon because it was against the teachings of the church. His teachings were evaluated and was concluded by some as heretic and the others found it to be outrageous and unpleasant to religious ears. The question is why is the thesis controversial? The simple answer to the same is that the document had hit the emotional strings of the authority structure of the medieval church. He demanded the Pope to regret and feel sorry for his acts for no influence but the assurances he had gained from Scripture2. Further to this, it is to be understood that the 95 thesis was considered to be controversial as to not only due to selling of indulgences but it led to development of another very big question i.e. whether the Catholic Church had or could assume to sell ‘moksha’ or deliverance. It gave birth to a huge round of controversy during the time of Reformation.
