The Qur’an: Reconciling Islamic Values with Secular Society

This article debates the concept of wearing the hijab/veil/headscarf, with some believing such dress is a symbol of oppression of women, while others believing it the symbol of freedom of choice and liberty. The article highlights the different interpretations of the Quran and the Hadith regarding the requirement of women to wear such dresses. It also discusses the laws in many of the Muslim majority countries in the Middle East where wearing these traditional overalls is mandatory for women, and penalties are imposed on women who refuse to wear them in public places. The article also highlights the views of different feminists both for and against the tradition of wearing hijab/veil/headscarf. Finally, the article argues that it is essential to identify the real demon of religious indoctrination and dogma that undermines human equality and breeds the grounds for oppression for women.

This essay discusses the double standards faced by Muslim women in Islamic societies, focusing on gender roles, identity, and the impact of hip-hop culture. It analyzes two articles on Muslim girls in Canadian Islamic schools and the roles of Black Muslim women in the hip-hop industry.

Double Standards Faced by Muslim Women in Islamic Societies

The issue of women in Islam is highly controversial. From the perspective of Muslim, Islam always provides women in the society, a position of respect and honour along with clearly stated obligations and rights. However, the historical circumstances through the centuries have often worked on the disfavour of the Islamic Women, their predominant tradition of male authority and the honour that have made women face difficulties in availing themselves the rights guaranteed by the Holy Quran. This essay shall elaborate on the condition of Women in Islamic society of Egypt (Abdelmonem & Galán, 2017). It would highlight the issues in the Islamic form of modesty and the judgement that are levelled against it. The Islamic expectation of women to observe modesty by means of covering themselves as much as possible in order to safeguard themselves from sexual predators and for the sake of maintaining their honour is but a farcical and archaic principle which puts the onus of blame on women for their predicament.
