INTRODUCTION
Safety management system effectively provide significant manner to continuously identify
and monitor hazards and further control risk with the help of maintaining assurance that the
identified risk are controlled in an efficient manner. Safety management system is a systematic
approach that helps in managing risks in effective manner (Zhou, Goh and Li, 2015). It is
important in assuring quality management through which organisation can accomplish its safety
goals in effective manner. Furthermore, it has been identified that safety management system
provides organisation a framework to significantly establish and duly foster positive corporate
safety culture. Main purpose of safety management system is to implement policies practices and
procedures in order to assure safe functioning. Present report has been conducted on the concept
of safety management system along with the reason of its introduction. In addition to this report
also includes safety management system implementation within airline companies. This report
includes the analysis of accident of Birmingham accident with British Airways. Along with this
changes that were introduced after 9/11 to maximize aircraft security is also included in this
report.

What is a Safety Management System and how is it structured?
Managing business activities, processes to prevent injuries, accident and applying principles and
framework and minimize other work is known as safety management. Safety management
system is systematic approach to managing the safety includes accountability, organizational
structure and policies (Bahr, 2014). Safety management system is designed to manage the risk in
the workplace and reduces the risk level. There are four main structures of safety management
system. First, Safety policy- To continually improve safety establishes senior management’s
commitment, Establishes clear objectives, Define organisation structure, methods and process
needed to meet safety goals. Second, Safety management Risk that determines the need for new,
adequate or revised risk control based on assessment, Third, Safety assurance implemented risk
control strategies. Fourth, Safety Promotion includes communication and training that creates
positive safety culture in workplace.
