BACKGROUND:
China Pakistan Economic Corridor is a collection of projects related to enhancement of
infrastructure in Pakistan since 2013. CPEC comes under the wing of program “Belt and Road
Initiative” which was launched by China in 2013. It’s a program which aims at connecting the
world for trade through one road stretched in the form of a long belt which connects three
continents, Asia, Africa and Europe. The roads are actually the sea-routes that will connect the
three continents together. CPEC links the seaport in Gawadar with the Northern Pakistan through
a 3000km long road stretched throughout maximum cities of Pakistan. In addition to road, CPEC
also includes railways, oil, and gas pipelines. This program has the probability to bring
integration and cooperation in the region. This corridor will be of great benefit for the land
locked countries of central Asia. Furthermore, it provides China with a safer and cheaper land
route for the transportation of their goods as China is a country which faces problem of cold
water bodies. As, Pakistan is a country of warm water, its geographical position as well as this
characteristic of being a warm water country played the key role for its selection as a corridor.

This program is depicted as beneficial to both Pakistan and China. Following is an overview of
the infrastructural and other benefits this program will bring.
Industrial, economical and environmental prosperity in the lives of Gwadar people,
Baluchistan and Pakistan.

40 Billion US dollar invested in energy sector, while remaining amount in other projects.
