The health belief model was established in the year 1950 by us public health service for
analysing and understanding failure of individuals in adopting disease prevention
strategies. This include screening tests for early detection of disease. This model is
derived from psychological and behavioral theory and it consists of foundation that is
linked with health related behaviour and desire for avoiding illness. There are basically
six elements that construct health belief model. These test of following factors
Perceived susceptibility – In context of MRS Allen, it is concluded that she is an ex
publican and she has been and ex-smoker. Lower legs of MRS Ellen are extremely
edematous. She is not able to manage home properly and so she has to take care of
dressing of legs that is negatively impacting the mobility and mood.
Perceived severity - it is defined as feeling of person on serious Ness of contracting and
illness or disease. In context of MRS Ellen, it is considered that a person has to
effectively consider medical consequences like death or disability along with social
consequences like relationships, family when there evaluating severity of the disease.
Perceived benefits -. This is defined as analysing perception of person for the
effectiveness of different actions needed for minimising threat of disease or illness. Mrs
Allen was facing problem when she was using her legs for managing the household
activities. This also affected her family members.
Perceived barriers - it is known as perception of individual to know what are the various
steps that can be taken to manage the threat of illness and disease. There are different
variations for or managing individuals barriers and impedance that lead to cost or
benefit analysis. There are various people who are involved in managing action
effectiveness for analysing what is expensive and dangerous or time-consuming. In
context of MRS Allen, there are several consequences of operating the leg as she is old
and suffering from various illness.
