About This Document

This paper focuses on the impacts of SCATS on the performance of transit in Adelaide City. It discusses the design of SCATS and its aim to improve mobility in congested corridors. The paper also highlights the lack of research on this topic and provides an analysis of data on traffic volumes and SCATS analysis.

Impacts of SCATS on Transit Performance in Adelaide City_1
ABSTRACT
The design of Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System which is commonly refered to as
(SCATS) is meant to assist in the improvement of the mobility on the corridors which are
congested with variable demands. This implies that SCATS has the aim of improving the
performance of the transit. Congestion in the urban areas has been a growing concern in
Australia. In the previous 15 years, the congestion has not only increased in the cities, but
resulted into longer peak Periods while the reliability of the travel time has continued to be
reduced. There has been expansion of the public transport in some urban areas with the
expansion being given a priority as an effective tool with the capacity to improve the mobility in
such places. Considering that most of the corridors in the urban centers are used by the transit
routes, the determination of the impacts of SCATS on the performance of transit in such kinds of
the corridors which are congested will be very crucial. It is regrettable to note that very little
research work has been done on the evaluation of the impacts of SCATS on the performance of
the transit. This particular paper has focused on similar impacts of SCATS on the transit
performance while making reference to Adelaide City.
