1TOURISM ISSUES
Introduction
That travel and tourism sectors can be considered as one of the sectors that undergo
changes keeping accordance with the changing time. The tourism industry is considered to be the
industry that has high level of relevance with the social as well as technological changes. Today
we will discuss about 3 major issues affecting the contemporary tourism industry. The issues to
be discussed include terrorism, sustainability issues and cultural issues.
Discussion
Terrorism
The term “terrorism” refers to the usage of intentionally indiscriminate violence as a
mean to create terror attack among masses of individuals. The increasing terrorist attacks across
the world are definitely imposing negative impact on the global tourism industry. According to
researchers, the political as well as the economic impact of terrorism on the tourism industry is
directly connected (Brondoni 2017). Increased terrorism in a tourist spot discourages tourist visit
that place which in turn results in financial deterioration of not only the specific area but also the
nation. According to a recent tourism market report, when terrorist attacks takes place in regions
dealing with political, economic as well as social unrest, the popularity of certain vacation
destinations gets affected (Baker 2015). Some of the countries that are currently suffering from
lack of tourists due to terrorism include Egypt and Turkey. A major example of gradually
decreasing number of tourism is France. According to a recent survey, overnight stays in Paris
have got reduced by 10 percent after the two close–occurring terrorist attacks took place
(Goldman and Neubauer-Shani 2017). Not only this, international flights booking to Nice after
the Bastille day attack has dropped by approximately 57.3 percent compared to the tourist

presence in the saw period previous year . In the ear 2017, the global costs due o terrorist attract
across the world have exceeded 52 billion dollars on the basis of life lost, property damage and
injuries. The global tourism industry has suffered a loss of 53 billion dollars in the past 1 year.
Considering the fact that a good number of local businesses are dependent on the tourism
industry, decreasing of tourist visit is imposing negative impact on their businesses.
Sustainability issue
With increasing demand for tourism and technological advancement, several regions as
well as countries are including themselves in the tourist industry. This in turn s imposing
significance impact on the natural resources, consumption patterns as well as natural habitats of
the world. Hence it is highly crucial to plan in a sustainable way so that the negative impact of
tourism on nature can be eradicated. () two of the chief sustainability issues associated with the
contemporary tourism industry is the misusage of water and electricity. When it comes to water
usage, several resorts and hotels across the world are found to waste lots of water due to
prolonged guest showers as well as for huge pools. More than 78 percent of the hotels across the
world are found to be using water for washing dishes and for laundry purposes that are not of
efficient at saving water and as a result a lots of water wastage takes place. Aragon-Correan et al.
(2015) argued that tourism accounts for not share in water use. However, the tourism industry is
found to be the major user of fresh water. For instance, in Cyprus, Barbados as well as Malta,
tourism accounts for up to 7.3 percent of national water consumption (Mowforth and Munt
2015). As a result of excessive wastage of water, the surface level water bears the risk of getting
polluted while the level of underground water will gradually drop. The accessibility to fresh
water will eventually decrease making it difficult for both tourist s as well as local resides to
have free and easy access to water. When it comes to misusage of energy and food, this factor

are also imposing negative impact on the tourism industry. Increasing electricity usage by
tourists is affecting the local electricity consumption which in turn possesses the risk of increased
in electricity costs in the near future (Ng et al. 2017).
Cultural issues
Tourism is directly related to the culture of the individuals residing in a specific tourist
spot. We can define tourism, as individuals visiting locations away from their home for either
pleasure or businesses purposes. Two major cultural issues are often faced by the tourists as well
as the residents as well as tourists which includes disregard to the local environment and cultural
clash (Richards 2018). One of the major examples of tourism spots getting affected due to
disregard to the local environment includes Iceland. Lack of hygienic sanitary habits in the
tourist is the major issue faced by the local residents of Iceland. The country has had to post
signs asking tourists to refrain from urinating and defecating on public attractions. Iceland
possesses a good number of clean public washrooms. However for using them visitor needs to
pay. Similar issue is experienced by China. The newly built Disney land Shanghai has a 98-acre
park that allows visitors to relax. Instead of enjoying the facility and keeping the place clean,
individuals are found to leave trash, vandalize equipments and allow children to use parks for
urinating making which in turn resulted in making the place unhygienic and unclean. Another
cultural issue that imposes a highly negative impact on the tourism industry is cultural clash.
Keeping accordance with the local culture is highly crucial in order to maintain an effective
global cultural bonding. hen tourists visit other countries and do not educate themselves about
the local customs, they can and often do offend the locals (Young and Maguire 2017). For
instance, in several Middle Eastern countries like Arab and Iran, women are supposed to cover

themselves. Cultural conflicts arrive when overly exposing dresses are worn by tourist in public
places.
Conclusion
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that the contemporary tourism industry
needs to develop strategies in order to eradicate the issues associated with terrorism,
sustainability and culture of the tourist spots. For this, both the local government as well as the
tourist agencies needs to work hand by hand. The support of local individual is also crucial to
eradicate the issues from core.
