Title Practical effectiveness of Method of Loci andStandard Rehearsal: A comparative study ofthe semantic processing techniques
Abstract:The semantic processing undoubtedly makes the method of memorising through encodingand recall much easier but the degree of ease offered by various techniques are different. Theunderstanding of the different conditions and the efficiency of the different techniques are anecessary part of the practical implementation of the techniques in a different situation thatmakes the comparative analysis of the efficiency of the methods important. This researchconducts an analysis of the same for the two techniques of semantic processing that are amethod of loci and standard rehearsal. In a controlled environment, the effectiveness of thetwo techniques is tested in a comparative practical experiment of two groups of participantsunder same conditions in case of a list of 20 words. The prediction of the groups using theprocess of the method of loci would be performing better than the other group using standardrehearsal was proven in the research.
TitlePractical effectiveness of Method of Loci and Standard Rehearsal: A comparative study of the semantic processing techniques Introduction The human memory or recall is a most complex process, which is divided into short-term andlong-term memory. The recall is the way the information committed to memory is drawnforth which forms the basis of the human memory. The process of committing information tomemory is called encoding, which according to Gross et al (2011) has great significance infacilitating recall of specific information and thus affects the cognitive ability of an individualgreatly. However, the different types of encoding like the visual encoding, phonologicalencoding and semantic encoding all have their specific advantages. These processes aretherefore appropriate for different types of information like, colours, sounds and words, which form the basic categories of information stored in the brain. In the opinion of Mobergetet al., (2014), the semantic encoding is vastly superior in cases of long-term memory andrecall and the process of semantic encoding that initiated the process of memorizing specificinformation can significantly impact the recall process efficiency and accuracy. The differenttypes of semantic encoding like the method of Loci (MoL), standard rehearsal and processingof imagery all have a different level of impact on the process of encoding and thus affect therecall differently (Bass & Oswald, 2014; Hudon, Villeneuve & Belleville, 2011). The importance of the understanding of the interrelation between the recall performance ofspecific memory and its impact on cognitive learning or correct recall of specific informationis the main purpose of the study. This study focuses on two specific semantic encoding
processes that are Method of Loci and standard rehearsal in a practical setting and theircomparative analysis in a practical setting. In the opinion of Kuo, (2017), the semantic encoding process can be likened with using thearrangement of information in the memory in an interrelated pattern where the keyinformation is stored at a specific locus and one information that is located at specificlocation leads to recall of all the related information without conscious effort. This process isspecifically significant for memory impairment were the easier to recall information can beused to find information that is more complex. Fellner et al., (2016) explored the relation ofbrain functions during encoding and recall for mnemonic techniques of encoding. Thefindings clearly indicated that the method of loci being the most effective technique in case ofcommitting information to long-term memory. On the other hand, Campoy et al., (2015),researched the standard rehearsal technique for semantic encoding and concluded itssuperiority in case of short-term memory. This understanding of the different types ofencoding process specifically in the semantic encoding of information and the specificadvantages and disadvantages of the different encoding techniques in a practical setting underdifferent conditions. According to the above research, the different methods or techniques allhave their importance in the encoding and recall based on the type of information frequencyof recall and other factors that play a role in the overall management of the information andthe encoding process. According to Kroneisen & Makerud, (2017) the information type significantly affect theeffectiveness of the encoding technique and the method of loci specifically is more efficientat recalling of verbal information than the written information. Similarly, the standardrehearsal is much more efficient at encoding verbal or auditory information to long-termmemory through their effectiveness in case of other visual memory is moderate at best. Bar &DeSouza, (2016) successfully related the auditory information stored through rehearsal with
