Topic: why is it so difficult to ban tobacco advertising in the developing
world?
Abstract:
Consumption of tobacco has significantly increased in the developing countries. According to
the statistical data, 7 billion of the annual death may have occurred due to tobacco consumption
in the developing countries within 2030. Thus, it is essential to adopt some effective tools and
ban programs by the governments in these countries in order to reduce tobacco consumption. But
it seems to be impossible as most of the developing countries are being proliferated through the
development of various tobacco industries which contributes a percentage of GDP to those
countries. Most of the developing countries are failing to ban tobacco advertisement due to the
political holds behind the tobacco industries. Strict policies have not been made in these
countries intentionally. Most of these tobacco companies are advertising their brands by paying
the government a lump sum amount. It has been observed that tobacco industries are making a
favorable environment by influencing the politicians, and by doing so, they can minimize the
restrictions for the tobacco advertisement (Abdullah, 2019). Not only that, people and
governments of many countries are not aware of the health risks that are associated with tobacco
consumption. Some of them are still lacking the resources and tools to counter tobacco
marketing. But the scenario is not the same in all over the world. There are few developing
countries like India who are actively participating in the anti-tobacco program and restrict the
production and marketing of tobacco and by applying various strict policies (Langford et al.,
2015). This essay will elaborate an argumentative discussion on the problems of banning tobacco
advertisements in the developing countries.
