Executive summary
Total Cost ownership for organization software is the sum of all indirect and direct costs
incurred by the software. TCO is critical for ROI calculation. Server hardware specifications is a
technical description of all the server components and its capabilities. This includes the speed of
the processor, hard disk, and RAM
The server infrastructure of Murdoch University is aging and is in need of improvements
to support the current industry standards. This is a proposal which will provide a specification of
the server and storage solution which meets some of the requirements such as 100 CPU cores, 40
TB of redundant storage and an uninterruptible power supply.

Introduction
When one plans for hardware which is required for server deployment one should first
determine the usage requirements for the organization. Some of the variables which are required

to be determined are users, average tasks per one project, and number of tasks. Murdoch
University is currently using a network simulation software Open-source EVE-NG and Cisco’s
packet Tracer. This server proposal paper will have four parts which are the hardware required
to set the hardware and software required to set-up the server, the purchase price of the software
and hardware, and total cost of ownership.
Hardware required
When planning for server hardware requirements for a university deployment, one need
to estimate server scalability which ought to be based on peak visitors. Computer scientist define
peak visitors as the editor to viewer ratio and the total content. The total content as the estimated
as the count of total spaces and the editor ratio as the number of visitors performing updates
versus those who are only viewing the content. Another consideration to make is the maximum
number of the reported usages. The third consideration is the hard disk requirements. Example
the more the attachment that the university have the more the disk required; if the university have
online documentation the minimum requirements for a disk space is 140 Gb for private intranet
the required disk space is 130 Gb.
Server hardware specifications are technical description of the server capabilities. The
listed specifications are processor speed where the processor speed will be indicated in gigahertz.
The random access memory which will be indicated in gigabytes and the hard disk which is a at
times called ROM space.
There are two major environments within the university which are the staff environment.
The two environments ought to completely be separated so as to provide high availability. Table
one below provides a high level view of server hardware requirements for university staff
requirements. The required server is a web server application server and windows file server.

All the servers need to have keyboard and mouse. With an optical storage i.e. a DVD
drive slot and four flash ports for hard drive. The server needs to have a network card port both
RJ 45 port and RJ 11 port. A super VGA (1024 by 768) resolution. All the servers need to come
with a 23 inch monitor (Hioki, 2009). The resolutions that the monitor need to support is 64 by
240 at 1bpp, 320 by 240 at 2 bpp, and 240 by 160 at 4bpp. In addition, the monitor need to
display various display modes such as 1/2/4 bit per pixel color depth support, programmable
cursor control, 3 overlapping screens in graphic mode, and text, graphics combined with graphic
and text display modes. Lastly, the server need to have a low power consumption.
Software required
The web server needs to be running VMware vSphere virtualization environment 64 bit.
The server needs to have be installed with internet Kaspersky’s anti-virus with a five years
license. Other software to be installed are Microsoft office 2016 64 professional edition. The
application server need to be installed with Ubuntu server software. The server also need to be
installed with Kaspersky’s anti-virus software installed with a five year license (Guthrie & Lowe,
2018). Other software required is .Net Framework version 3.5 SP 1 where 11.2 or higher is
required, windows media player 10 or higher. The BIOS settings ought to have the following
settings; a boot order should be hard drive, DVD and flash drive, the power management should
be maximum, processor options ought to be hyper-threading enabled and should disable the
UEFI mode settings

Purchase price of the hardware and software
The two types of UPS comes with a market price of 179 dollars. The two types of server
required comes with a price of 2000 dollars. Twenty three inches monitor server comes with a
price of 200 dollars. All the hardware need to be brand new devices with a five year warrant.
Kaspersky’s anti-virus comes with a market price of 10 dollars for internet one. The antivirus
one comes with a market price of 5 dollars. The VMware vSphere virtualization environment has
a market price of $1200 (Desai, 2014)
Total cost of ownership (TCO)
TCO is designed to assist in assessing an organization indirect and direct costs associated
with information technology. When evaluating this TCO for this university four consideration
were made these are; the initial costs of software and hardware, cost for initial server deployment
and staff training, the ongoing cost for maintenance fees for software upgrades and updates and
the help-desk support and the expenses related to network and system maintenance back-up and
data protection services, and the costs associated with downtime (Kajamoideen, 2015).

Conclusion
This is a server hardware and software specification document. This paper has
documented the hardware required to set-up servers for Murdoch University. This has be done
by completely specifying the actual hardware required, their manufacturer and models. Also the
paper has highlighted the price that goes with hardware and their software license. In addition,
the paper has documented the total cost of ownership for the two types of servers which have
been specified. Total cost ownership has been utilized to help vendors and the university
determine the indirect and direct costs of the server hardware and software
