UPS is one of the largest package delivery company in USA and also conduct may

organization is facing some major problem in it business operations such as Geographical
Concentration and high debt (Wieland, and Marcus Wallenburg, 2013).
One of the biggest factor which is impacting the growth of UPS is its quality measures
because with increasing services the quality serving customers is declining. The organization is
conducting its business operation in many countries such as Africa, Asia and middle east but on
the primarily they are focused on the domestic mark which is USA. As compared to their
competitors FedEx and TNT, UPS geographical exposure is very less. They rely too much on
one region in which they operate domestically. It creates negative impact on organization's
performance and quality. For example the recession in the US had a major impact on UPS.
Another problem which UPS facing is increasing high debt due to low quality in its services,
they are not generating enough amount of money from its business and therefore decreasing the
quality of services.
(Bon and Mustafa, 2013). At present, on company there is high debt and the company is unable
to make payment to their creditors. Due to this UPS's market prices are decreasing and the
consumer demand for it services is also declining which is affecting the growth and development
of organization for a long run.
Along with this, there are some other problems which are effecting firm and its business
operations. Strikes and hindrance is another major problem which arising due to management
conflicts with employees regarding working hours, work environment etc. Due to interruption in
organizational functioning the company start losing its reputation and loyalty of its stakeholders.

The terms of future collective bargaining agreements also may affect UPS competitive position
and results of operations. Moreover, the intense competition in the transportation industry is
making things complex for the firm in order to maintain stability. (Chen and et.al., 2014). The
rivalries of UPS are gaining competitive advantage and are involved in improving their financial
capacity and are focusing on serving better quality customer services in comparison to UPS.
In order to over come with these all problems, organization is focusing on improving its
service quality. Therefore to overcome this problem the enterprises is focusing on implementing
the Total Quality Control (TQC). TQC is process which enhances the design of delivering
products according to customer requirements. Further, with the use of this method the company
can improve working quality and its process. This process enables the firm in making its
services innovative and unique in order to gain competitive advantages and serve customer
satisfaction (Gilmour, 2013).

understating among employees and their working conditions. 5S methodology has expanded
from manufacturing and is now being applied to a wide variety of industries including health
care, education, and government. UPS can make use of this 5 s approach as the method provides
the access over every operation which can assist the management in maintaining the quality of

DMAIC method
This method is also known as Six Sigma method. It is set of technique and tools for
process improvement. It seeks to make improvement to the quality of output of process by
identifying and removing defects from the manufacturing process. This process is followed by
defined sequence of steps and target to specific value targets. In manufacturing units this process
is mainly focuses on reduces cycle time and reduce costs ad increases customers satisfaction and
increases profits ( Konieczka and Namiesnik, 2016). Apart from this, with the sue of this
approach ups can determine its actual problem behind declining quality of services and for that it
has 5 systematic step which are as follows:
Defining: At first the company will have to have to define its major problem which is the
reason the behind declining profits and growth and development of the firm.

went through secondary source in which Whereas, the secondary information was gathered
11

effectively maintained. Some of the strengths are as follows:

effective and they are able to eliminate the issues or the problems that are faced by the business
in effective manner.
Weakness
It can be determined to be the areas in which firm need to take up appropriate steps so
that they will be able to raise their sales and profitability. This can also be considered as barriers
for the business. Blow given are the weakness that are faced by UPS:
Geographical focus:
There are many areas internally that are covered by the business. There are many
countries around that world in where business can be operated. However, the total time period
when compared with the firm was founded, there are still many countries were business can start
up. In other words, UPS need to put on their efforts in which they can raise their customer’s base
effectively and efficiently.
High debt:
The total investment that are made by the firm is not effective and they are not able get
back with higher returns. It is important for the business to make sure that they can recover their
debts and improve their profitability.
High turnover:
There are different type of reasons due to which employees leave the firm. As per the
type of problems that are faced by the workers of UPS is related with high work pressure. In
order to overcome this type of issue, it is important for the business to make sure that they are
15
Document Page
able to provide employees with proper training so that they can management time and the rate of
pressure of work can be reduced. In other words, the rate of employees turnover at UPS is high
and this is a type of weakness that are face by the firm.
Opportunities
Due to globalization and the exponential rate at which the global market, many business
opportunities open up that UPS could capitalize on. The most significant opportunities that are
available to UPS are: Geographical Expansion and Online Shopping
Geographical Expansion
One of the biggest weakness UPS has is their over reliance on the US market therefore to
insulate the company form the negative effects that could impact the macro environment of the
states, UPS should seriously consider expanding to regions around the globe. UPS first showed
intention of reaching across borders when they acquired a unit of Inter-Europa Globalni
Logisticni Servis which is a firm that has been delivering small packages within Slovenia since
1991. (Yahoo, 2009) This business move showed a lot of promise since UPS will now be able to
invest in its global brand, transportation network, technology and workforce to serve its growing
customer in a more effective and efficient manner. One should also consider that once UPS has
consolidated its hold on the market share of Slovenia they would be able to focus on expanding
across the borders into break away counties of the former USSR. Also with the growing strength
of FedEx and DHL in the Middle East region and Asia it is very heartening to see a new global
player enter the scene in the form of UPS as they strive to garner a large portion of the market
share in the region.
All this information shows that UPS has to seriously consider to aggressively garnering more of
the market share globally since they have the recourses and the capital to do so.
Online Shopping
The online shopping industry has grown explosively in the last five years with an unprecedented
rate of growth that this is a field that UPS should definitely consider expanding into before one
of their competitors do. Total sales generated by e-commerce have grown explosively over the
last five years. Though economy took a massive beating from the backlash of the recession

online retail still shows more signs of the consumerism during recession than consumer retail as
a whole. A majority of US online consumers changed their mindsets from 'cutting back' to'
spending cautiously' and shifted more of their shopping habits online. Therefore this is a golden
opportunity for a company like UPS to use its supply chain which is one the best in the world
and pool its capital and recourses to open an online market.
Threats
Strikes & work stoppage
Strikes & work stoppage may led UPS to lose its customers permanently, if it is unable to
provide uninterrupted service and this could adversely affect the company’s business, financial
position and results of operations. Labor problems could disrupt the company's operations,
resulting in lower revenues and loss of credibility. (Cleland and Carmel, 1996)
UPS should keep an eye on the temperature of the ongoing labor negotiations and perhaps
engage in some early-stage strategic planning relative to crisis management in the event that the
news does not get better soon.
One key consideration would be to identify non-premium ground services that are less likely to
be impacted by a work stoppage. UPS need to create new jobs if the volume of packages
delivered is increasing and as per the agreement with the union.
UPS management must change how it sees the union and should be engaging in "win/win"
strategies rather than “us-versus-them” one.
UPS adopt Corporate Culture that shared values and beliefs with their employees. And also boost
the employee morale by doing survey on how happy employees are and put appropriate action
plan to improve their way of work, commitment and engagement.
Intense Competition
The aggressive competition in the transportation industry continues to consolidate and
competition remains strong. As a result of consolidation, the company’s competitors may
increase their market share and improve their financial capacity, and may strengthen their
competitive positions. Business combinations could also result in competitors providing a wider
17
Document Page
variety of services and products at competitive prices, which could adversely affect UPS
financial performance.
UPS should work on expanding on global trade and emerging market growth, as this seems to be
investment and growth for their current customers and it will be a source of contribution of big
revenue.
