Commonwealth Games 2018 is also known as Gold Coast 2018 or XXI
Commonwealth Games.
The event is an international multi-sport event that is organized for the members of
Commonwealth that were held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, and Australia.
This event was the first that achieved gender equality by organising equal numbers of
events for female and male atheletes.
This event was held from 4th to 15th of April 2018 and it was the fifth time that the
event was held worldwide. More than 4,100 athletes took part in the event along with
300 Para-athletes from 71 Commonwealth Games Association as well (Embracing,
2018).
There were 275 sets of medals attributed to 19 commonwealth games. These sporting
events were held at 14 locations in the host city, two venues in Brisbane and one in
each Townsville and Cairns.
Gold Coast became the seventh Oceanian city and the first city in the first city in the
region to host Commonwealth Games.

Tourism industry of Australia has seen a great boon in the last
two decades. Over the past decade it has given employment to
too many people.
Alone the employment created in the Food and Accommodation
industry was around 914,100 in the year 2018 and it aims to get
double by 2023 (Australian Government, 2018).
Even in the time of economic recession, when the tourism
industry throughout the world has declined, it remained
constant. The total economic inbound value is expected to rise
by 3.8% and reach to $71.7 million in 2019. Such games will
boost the industry in coming years.

Hosting of the Commonwealth games in Gold Coast has benefitted both Australia
and Queensland. The most significant impact was on the employment as large
numbers of people got employment in the area (Australian Industry and Skill
Committee, 2018).
Gold Coast welcomed around 670,000 visitors over the duration of the game
which included 265,000 domestic overnight stay. The state benefited in the sense
that more than 1500 jobs were created in the state and hence there was 30%
increase in the visitor’s volume in the city.
Australia earned around $320 million from the game (Ken Mangraviti Pty Ltd,
2018).
$ 14 billion investment was pipelined that will bring new tourism products in the
state. It will help the state to become $ 25 billion tourism industry. More than $4.1
billion worth projects happened in Australia (Pham, et al. 2018. ).
This event has created an opportunity for permanent legacy benefits from
infrastructure improvement which includes Gold Coast Light Rail Stage two.

Hosting of the commonwealth Games helped the state to develop

direct impact on the numbers of people coming to the
city for visiting purpose (GC2018, 2018).
