INTRODUCTIONFor all tourism professionals, operating sustainably in the current’s dynamic and complexenvironment is quite a difficult target to achieve. Tourism impacts its different stakeholders indestinations, as it is both a source of revenue as well as negative effects at an economic, socialand environmental level. It is important to increase the tourist’s value of a destination throughsustainable operations. Lately, the relationship amid the tourists and innovation has becomestronger. Now, destinations cannot remain viable without the implementation of innovations inbusiness. Science and technology history is related with the invention of methods, techniques adtools and depicts how understanding and knowledge has allowed people to develop new thingsand systems (Mair, 2005). According to Hjalager, “much innovative power in tourism does notoriginate from tourism itself, it is the effect of something that happens elsewhere, and tourism isnot an innovative pioneer”. Pertaining to this, the main aim of the research report is to criticallyevaluate the statement by making use of specific examples from tourism, hospitality and eventorganization. For this purpose, Marriott international has been taken into consideration. It is anAmerican multi-national diversified hospitality organization being headquartered in Maryland. The hotel is engaged in delivering numerous quality facilities related to lodging and hotels frompast several years (About Marriott Hotels, 2018). Further, the report will provide a systematicand analytically concise of various innovations that were not specifically invented for tourismbut influenced the tourism to a great extent. Furthermore, the current study will include differenttheoretical understandings of innovation and key challenges of innovation being faced byMarriott international will be discussed significantly.CRITICAL DISCUSSIONDefinition of innovationAccording to Schumpeter, there is a difference between innovations and inventions.Talking about inventions, they are generally connected with basic scientific or technologicalresearch and are being used for defining candid breakthroughs. Further, they are not aimed atspecific industrial use. On the other hand, innovation refers to further development of inventionsand making an idea into useful products (Ateljevic and Dorne, 2000). Therefore, innovation is arealistic term that takes into consideration minor alteration of existing products and services.1
This definition of innovation can be used effectively to define what goes in tourism. Throughvarious types of innovations, a good guide for research and practice can be offered.Typology of innovation in tourismProduct innovation– It involves changing or entirely new products and services beingdeveloped to the stage of commercialization and its uniqueness is evident to customers, suppliers and competitors. For instance, in recent years, the new tourism products beingdeveloped by Marriot international are loyalty programs, environmental friendlysustainable accommodation amenities, events on the basis of local culture etc.Management innovation– Management innovation includes new authority system, collaborative styles and job profiles. It can be combined with the introduction of newproducts and services or any production technologies. Because of this type of innovation, job can be enriched which will further result into empowerment of staff (Bijker, Hughesand Pinch, 2012).Process innovations– It involves raising the performance of existing operations byinnovating the present technology or by redesigning the entire product line. This type ofinnovation can be shared with further innovation in products.Process innovation can beseen in Marriot international like implementation of computer based managementsystems, robots of cleaning and maintenance etc.Logistics innovation– It takes into consideration breakdown of external commercialliaisons. Through this, the position of the individual enterprise can be affected in thevalue chain. Talking in relation with tourism, it includes vertical linkage of food andrestaurant industries, integration of information system, internet marketing, enhancementof airport hub systems and many more.Institutional innovation– This type of innovation divides the public and private sectorand creates new rules of the game. Institutional innovation will impact the tourism invarious ways i.e. reforming of the financial incentives that restructures social as well ashealth tourism (Hall and Williams, 2009).2
