INTRODUCTION
Tourism, hospitality and event management plays a very important role and is the worlds
largest industries in service sector. Tourism management includes the activities regarding the
travel planning as well attracting and meeting expected needs and requirements of the tourists
and travellers. Hospitality management refers to managing the activities where people come and
meet and customer services are provided to them like food and lodging service and managing the
events refers to the events regarding social, festive and corporate events. The essay will include
how the tourism, hospitality and event industries are managed and their contribution towards UK
economy(Camilleri, 2018).

Tourism industry of UK economy
Tourism and travel sectors are two important aspects that are growing rapidly and given
maximum contribution towards the UK economy at the same time it is having positive and
significant impact on the UK economy every year. In the year 2016 tourism industry has
contributed around 217 billion pounds towards the GDP of UK and has grown continuously
since last five years. It has grown four times wider in the year 2017 in UK as per the new report
that was launched by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
WTTC's latest report have stated as per the research simultaneously with the Oxford
economics that Travel and tourism of UK has contributed 6.2% towards GDP in the year 2017
and more than Global average (4.6%) four times quicker as a whole towards UK economy (grew
by 1.5%) and translated 214 billion of GBP which contributed into GDP and 4 million of jobs
and 29 billion of GBP in exports(Robinson and et.al., 2016).
This contribution has shown that travel and tourism is playing an essential role in rapidly
growing economy and creating job opportunities in UK and protecting the interest of this
industry. Given below are the impact of travel and tourism on UK economy:-
Positive impacts
As per the research Gloria Guevara WTTC President and CEO, said that travel and
tourism have contributed not only in this industry but in the whole economy of UK. This sector
has improved the competitiveness and faces various challenges for the long term. It has increased

the job opportunities for local people as well as income to local people. This sector helps to
preserve the services for rural areas like buses, post offices. It creates the sources regarding
earnings of foreign exchange(Hudson and Hudson, 2017).
Negative impacts
Traffic will result to pollution. Demand for creating more hotels and shops and The jobs
are not permanent it is according to the season and have long hours of working at the same time
it has low paid salary.
Total contribution of travel and tourism towards the GDP of UK (2012 to 2028)
This statistics shows the total contribution of tourism to GDP from 2012- 2108 and with
addition it forecasted for the year 2028 and over the year the GDP has increased around 213.8
billion pounds.
Spending of international tourists in UK from 2012 to 2028n ( in billion GBP)
This below statistics shows the annual value for the tourist exports in UK from 2012 to
2018 and in addition it forecasted for the year 2028. spending for international tourists have
come across 28.6 billion pounds.

Another important service sector which is hospitality. It plays a very important role in
contributing to UK economy. Hospitality is very wide industry which includes the customer
services like food, lodging at various destinations, hotels, parks, restaurants etc. This industry
focuses on fulfilling customer needs and satisfaction of the customers of UK.
Hospitality is influencing the culture of the British and played a very essential role in
success and growth and has contributed billions of ponds every year. In last year around 34
million people visited in UK (United Kingdom) and for the economy it generated 125 billion
pound. In the year 2016 the total number of overseas that visitor have spend around 22 billion
pound in UK. And around 70% of total in-bound was spend in hospitality industry(McKercher
and Tung, 2015).
In the year 2011 and 2012 the hospitality industry of British has huge amount of overseas
that was generated by the event sector like Royal wedding, the Ryder cup and Olympics. This
has increased enormous number of tourists in UK. The recent report which was by the British

biggest employer in UK. In the year 2016 it has contributed to job opportunities and 3.2 million
jobs were directly and 2.8 million jobs were indirectly(Lugosi and Jameson, 2017)
The total turnover has increased for all the businesses in the sector of hospitality that has
reached around 98 billion in the year 2017 as compared to the year 2016 and 2015 which were
92 billion pound and 86 billion. And in recruitment sector it is expected to reach 100 billion in
ONS 2018 data. The service sector firms which is giving services like accommodations and food
it has grown up to 20% from the last five years that have reached 202,060 as compared to 2013
which was 169,235.
Key risk factors of hospitality
Their are number of risk factors that have been in recent years in UK that have occurred
due decrease in GDP growth and low increase regarding the new openings of hotel and due to
increase in customer focus. The below pie chart will show the accommodations that are under
construction and were anticipated to open in the year 2017 and 2018. The various another
accommodations renderers like hostels and economy services have also attracted the business
travellers with leisures(Robinson, Ruhanen and Breakey, 2016)

From the above data it is predicted regarding the upcoming years for the developments of
the industry in a positive way to increase the economic conditions as well as visitors. The
industry must be cautious about the travellers which depends internationally.
Event industry of UK economy
Event industry is also another important part of service sector which play an essential role
in contributing to UK economy. It includes managing as well as developing the events at large
scale like conferences, shows, social events, festivals and ceremonies. The UK is known for top
destination in the world which various businesses looks for hosting big events. It was on the third
place ICCA rankings in the year 2015, 2016 and 2017 which was known for the destination to
organise events related to business(Wise and Harris, 2017).
The UK event sectors provide the best opportunities for planning the events , organising
the events as well as marketing the events in order to attract and make amazing events at
international level. Currently the event industry is growing internationally and it has contributed
42.3 billion pounds to economy of UK. The events like conferences meetings have contributed
the largest share that is 19.9 billion pounds in the service industries of UK. This has resulted to
high increase in foreign investment and growth at the international level(Folgado-Fernández,
Hernández-Mogollón and Duarte, 2017).

As per the upcoming interruption that is due to the departure between the UK and
European union (EU) as scheduled by Brexit for march 2019 all businesses who are in the event
industry must prepared before.The event industries of UK should make use of the powerful
technologies in order to enhance and protect the event sector to maintain UK's position as a top
destination(Wise and Harris, 2017).
The challenges faced by the event industries of UK
The major challenges that are currently faced by the UK economy is the Crisis regarding
the staff as per the arrival of new EU free era. The suppliers of events can only operate and the
reason for this is the ready availability regarding the EU staff unit. Another risk that UK event
industry can face is the promotion of the events at global level. Global trade and foreign
investment are the main important factor to the event industry of United Kingdom which result
to strong connections and business links internationally. But due to Brexit the risk posses to these
two factors. As per the C&IT's 2016 state of the event industry research has revealed that the
Brexit is the biggest threat towards the event industry that event planners have felt(Lu, Chen
and Law, 2018).

From the above essay it is concluded that the tourism, hospitality and events plays a very
important role in the service sectors of the UK economy and it also included the contributions of
tourism like it has created various job opportunities and with the help of statistics it has shown
its greatest contribution since past five years. towards the UK economy as well as the positive
and negative impact of the tourism on the UK economy. It also explained regarding hospitality
industry and its statistical contribution to the economy. Further it also explained regarding the
event industry and its contribution as well as challenges faced by the industry.
