Pavement Condition Survey and Maintenance Techniques_1
Introduction
In the previous two weeks, there has been a thorough research work on the specific topics of the
study. Each topic has been studied in the context considered relevant for research work.
Pavement Condition Survey process and pavement distress.
Pavement Condition Survey basically refers to the operation that is carried out to give an
indication of the physical conditions of road pavements and serviceability. These activities have
three major aspects that include quality management, data collection, and condition rating. The
study that was carried out was inclined towards semi-automated and automated means of
collecting data on the pavement (Taha, Sirin and Sadek 2014). Condition rating involved
quantifying the condition of the assets of pavements as per the selected index or scale. The
selected rating index that was chosen during the study depended on the resources that were
available and its ability to address the issues that were related to pavement. I considered these
two factors to be very crucial.
There are two key categories of condition indexes. They include measured condition index and
estimated indexes. The estimated condition rating is normally based on the physical conditions
that have been observed on the pavements. The measured condition rating, on the other hand, is
based on the trained rater's observations. It is important to note that the kind of condition index is
backed by physical measurements including mathematical expression and roughness. In order to
ensure that the collected data met the requirements of the pavement management process, there
was conduction of quality management (Sirin et al.2013).
Procedure
Pavement Condition Survey and Maintenance Techniques_2
The sections will be identified from pavement management system. The identification will be
done by the pavement management unit. These units are based on boundaries of district and
region, planned construction, historical construction and highway classification. In very many
instances, the conditions of the pavement are expected to be uniform along the whole pavement.
The pavement management engineer will actually perform the review of each suggestion on a
case by- by case to determine if there will be need for the adjustment of the section boundaries.
The scores will be assigned on the scale from 0 to 100 points. The estimation will be done to the
nearest 5 points. The exception will be from 96100 whose estimation will be done by an
increment of 1 point. The first step in the scoring will be used in the determination of the perfect
category condition which will be from very good to poor. The step that will follow is to assign
score from 0 to 100 points.
Index
Condition Definition
Very good : No cracking, no deformation, no patching and very stable. The
qualities of riding are very excellent.
Good: Minor cracking, stable generally hard to detect.
Fair: Minor areas of structural weakness. Detection of cracking is easier.
Poor: Area/section is unstable, there are numerous patterns of cracks.
Very poor: Pavement is extremely in condition of deterioration.

Reflections
During the research work I discovered that implementation process will involve activities like
quality criteria, the specification of the protocol of data collection, quality acceptance, and
responsibilities of the personnel, quality management documentation and corrective action.
There is usually room for the improvement in nearly all aspects of the management process of
pavement. There is normally a need to carry out a periodic upgrade of the quality criteria by use
of basic statistical tools. The information available on the same subject was very scares. All the
procedures of quality management should be properly documented to assist in the improvement
of data in future. This will assist in data quality assurance and control
Maintenance and Rehabilitation techniques of pavement
In most of the cases, a combined effect of traffic loading and physical effects of the environment
contribute to the deterioration of pavements regardless of how well it has been designed. The
actions of maintenance including joint sealing, patching, crack sealing and fog sealing are
