Training and development Introduction Training and development is considered as the important part of the company that focuses on the improvement of the overall performance of the individuals and groups. It can be said that training is known as the education process that helps in boosting the skills, concepts and also assist in gaining knowledge that boost the performance of the workers. In this paper, the discussion will be made on the different methods of training that are used by the companies such as on the job training and off the job training. These two are considered as the important methods of training which can be considered by the companies to explain about the nature of work or about the activities that are conducted in the workplace. Methods of training On the job training Method This is one of the methods of giving training to the employees and it is useful in boosting the overall knowledge of the workers towards the work. The training is given to the workers on the floor or it can be said that on job training considers the existing workplace tools such as machines, documents and knowledge that assist to teach and employees how to give their best towards the work. On the job training can be defined as the method in which the workers, operative staff are offered direct instructions to complete their work on the actual work floor. The employees have the opportunity to acquire the skills that are needed to perform in the actual working conditions.There are also various methods that relates with on- the job training methods such as mentoring, job rotation, coaching and apprenticeship (Huang and Su, 2016). Mentoring This is one of the On- the job training method in which the training is provided to the managerial level individuals wherein the higher authorities gives instructions to the employees to conduct the routine activities. It is known as one-to-one training method in which the higher authorities are considered as the mentor who helps the employees in the tough situations. So, it can be said this is one of the best training method that helps the employees to consider the right direction at the time of working (Cohen, 2017). 2
Training and development Job rotation In this method the employee is shifted to the other related jobs and this helps to boost the knowledge of the employees towards the work. This also assist the employee to escape the boredom caused by doing the same kind of work on routine basis and it assist in creating the rapport with the other individuals in the workplace (Sanford and Sokol, 2017). Coaching This is also one of the methods of training in which the superior or the trained staff provides instruction to the employees to complete the particular task. The training is designed for the employees in that they can easily find the solutions of their problems or queries through instruction. Apprenticeship This is a type of training which is offered to the employees who are in craft, trade and technical sector and requires a long term learning to boost their skills. The training is given under the close supervision of the higher authorities. So, it can be stated that these are the methods that are used at the time of giving on the job training to the employees. Advantages of on- the job trainingEffective method of learning It can be analyzed that it is considered as the one of the practical way that helps the employees to understand the overall working pattern of the team and how they function. It also helps the employees to conduct the activities with the supervision of the experienced person.Enhance immediate productivity It has been examined that with on the job training, the employees get proper understanding of the work and also it helps to ensure that the resources of the company are used in the right manner. Lectures It is the method that is considered to train the white collar or the managerial workers in the company. Under this method the employees are given training in the room and there are trained employees who create awareness about the procedures. Simulation It is the popular form of training in which training is given on the specially designed equipment or the machines that are considered in the field or at the job. Thee equipment’s that are used are specially designed for the trainees that assist them to perform better. Case studies It is known as the written description of the situation that took place in the past in the same workplace. Disadvantage of OFF- the job trainingExpensive method It is the expensive method as training is given on the equipment’s that are specially designed for the trainers. This training also requires extra space, accommodation and also the cost of transportation (Sloman, 2017). Benefit of off the job training for both employer and employee It can be said that for the employees it is beneficial as on actual equipment’s training is provided. It provides them proper understanding of the work which lead to higher quality of the services. For employers also it is beneficial as it helps to boost the productivity which leads to higher profit ratio in the competitive market (Carkhuff, 2017). Conclusion It can be concluded that on the job training and off the job training both are effective methods of training. These training methods help to offer proper understanding of the nature of work to the employees and also boost the productivity. If these training programs are considered in a proper way then it could be easy to maintain the competitive position in the market. So, it can be said that these methods should be considered at the time of giving training. 5
