Nurse: you had a blackout may be due to extreme heat. We will check out if you had any mini
stroke or not.
Old lady: no!.. I did not fa..ll due to stroke.. please listen to… mee
Nurse: please be hurry up, Mrs. Brown. I have other patients to attend
Old lady: sorry miss.
(In the entire discussion, nurse failed to listen that the patient had fall as she had taken her insulin
twice resulting in low blood glucose level. The nurse failed to gather this information. She also
failed to understand that she was Islam by faith and had certain cultural inhibitions. All these
made the patient upset and depressed)

Poor questioning ability:
His wife brought a depressed obese patient to the healthcare center for interventions for his
obesity disorder. He was suffering from sleep apnoea and Pickwickian syndrome. He was
depressed for his body image and was not willing to speak. The nurse could not gather enough
information mainly as she asked closed ended question that did not give enough idea to her about
his daily routines.
Nurse: are you upset with your weight?
Man: kind off
Nurse: do you eat takeaway food?
Man: yes
Nurse: do you know that your BMI is 40.2 that make you vulnerable to life threatening disorders
Man: yes
Nurse: don’t you want to get well?
Man: no
Nurse: I am not getting clear idea about your lifestyle or other factors that are affecting you. Is it
work pressure for which you cannot do exercise

As the nurse did not conduct her questioning effectively, she could not understand the social

could not develop empathetic therapeutic relationship with the patients.

the patient)
Lady: I was having a pinning sensation with the stitches on the abdomen.
Nurse: (still looking at the chart and medication). Not an issue; that happens with all after the
surgery. You need to relax;
Lady: it would be helpful if you ….. (could not complete the sentence) (the phone of the nurse
rings)
Nurse: (picking up the phone) Oh hi! Lily ! yea I will be meeting with you tonight. What? Joe
not coming.., and (continues)
Lady: (still waiting for the nurse to complete her call) jus hold on lily for a sec! so Mrs. Brown i
am sending someone. Let see… (not even making any eye contact… leaves the room)
