1.0 Transformational Leadership1.1 Introduction Leadership is a concept that is used by organization in order to motivate, organize anddirect employees towards goals and objectives. Contemporary organizations adopts varied stylesof leadership as deemed appropriate in their organization structure. Transformational leadershipis a relatively new concept that is introduced by James McGregor Burns in the year 1978. Hisbasic concept revolved around making followers rise to a newer level of motivation andmorality. In transformational leadership, the leader is identifies a vision then works along withhis subordinates guiding them through inspiration. The concept is identified with contemporaryorganization for the purpose of motivating employees and enhancing their performance. 1.2 DiscussionTransformational leadership is a new concept and stresses on making the leader a rolemodel for followers. A transformational leadership structure provides a sense of purpose oforganizational values to individual employees by aligning them to it. A transformational leader isengaged deeply with his followers and understands individual capabilities well. He tries tomatch organization’s resources with individual capabilities of employees to help achieve goalsand objectives for the organization. He conducts an in-depth analysis of the environment prior toforming strategies and adopting them within the organization structure. A both waycommunication is adopted by the leader allowing employees to voice their opinion. Thisleadership structure is able to better motivate and encourage employees compared to previousmodels of leadership as transaction, servant or authoritative structures. 3 | Page
Unlike other models of leadership where the primary focus is delegation ofresponsibilities, this model focuses on building a positive type of relationship. There is greaterlevels of ownership in this type of leadership compared to other types as a leader tries tounderstand strengths and weaknesses of followers. Hence, it is known to deliver excellent resultsover other forms. This form allows greater autonomy of workers with greater inspiration toachieve goals. A leader in this structure could easily mobilize workers by developing excellentrapport with them. It is a better conflict resolution technique as they are known to be quiteleaders. Transformational leaders are known to bring about the process of change within anorganization without much conflict. The term transformational leader though was coined at alater stage, transformational leader are known to be present since historical times. Some of thegreatest transformational leaders are Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Jesus Christ, WinstonChurchill and many more.
