1.1 Historical evolution in the travel and tourism sector
18th Century- This period did not
promote travel and tourism that much.
Tourism for the people of this period
was quite burdensome. But later in the
year 1793, the first major mass
tourism was made to the coast of the
Baltic Sea (Mecklenberg-
Vorpommern). The travellers in this
period were made to the medieval
pilgrims who linked their faith in
religion with the enjoyment. Also,
travelling to the antiquities, industries
and natural history was popular in that
time. In the late 18th century, the
middle-class tourism was expanded to
the lakes, peak districts, etc. The main
interest of people in this period was
for mass or group tours.
19th Century: Thomas Cook began the
capitalising on a market niche in year
1841 in order to develop the package
tourism. Although, he was not the
creator of the package tour rather he
was a successful organiser who
influenced people for such type of
tourism. The addition of tour guides to
the industries also took place in this
time frame. The holiday making plans
were the biggest development in the
respective field that happened in this
period. But there was also a drawback
and that was the limitation of accessing
these package by the lower-class
20th Century- This century brought
revolutionary change in the travel and
tourism sector by providing the
chance to all class people to access
the various destination. The holiday
packages were not remaining limited
for the high-class only. Further,
leisure lover also experiences good
results from this time frame. Also, the
paid leaves for the holidays also
enhanced the business value of the
associated organisations. The
problems faced by the industries was
due to the wars that occurred in this
period. These wars affected them a lot
as people were afraid of going
anywhere else.
21st Century: This time period
experienced tremendous
development in the travel and
tourism. The evolution can be
examined with the help of high
competition present in between the
industries. Further, the
development and exploration of the
thrilling sites for the adventure-
lovers also took place in this
timescale.Travel and tourism sector grows rapidly in the
past few years and become one of the largest
industries in the world. The evolution of this
field depending upon the timescale is
considerable. From the journey of mass
pilgrimages to the adventure travelling, these
industries played a crucial role. The historical
