Travel and tourism has a vast history and from ancient time till present time it has been
considered to be the most important sector as it contributes effectively towards the economic
growth (Becken, 2012). This report covers the changes which took place in travel in tourism
sector from Greek and Roman empires to late twentieth century.
TASK 1
1.1 Historic development1. Trend of tourism for trading purpose (Greek and Roman empires (B.C.): During this
period people of Greek had tradition of great traders. In this era, growth in travel for
business reasons. Water was the main and the most important source moving
commodities. However, there was a lack of transportation and safety and less acceptance
of currency was an issue in tourism activities. Sea was the only means through which
people used to travel. However, people used to visit other countries for the purpose of
religious festivals, sporting events and visiting cities Athens (Jeong, Holland and Gibson,
2012). People used to carry Romans coins in order to enjoy their trip. Sporting games
which were started by Greeks where then copied by Romans which includes Javelin
throw, horse riding, fights-to-the-death.2. Medical tourism: Dark Ages Middle ages (500-1800 A.D.): During this age, people
used to travel for forgiveness of their sin and others travelled to receive “divine” cure to
their health issues. People used to visit different churches which included Santiago de
Campostele which is in Spain, churches of Paris France, Holy Land, etc.3. Mass traveling and development of tour packages: Early twentieth century (1900-
1945): During this era, economic prosperity has been increased and there was a
significant increase in systems, modes and speeds of travels. By this year people got
new means of transport which included road, sea, etc. in addition to this, different travel
and tourism organization can into existence which helped people visit different places.
Among these organizations one of the most popular which provided services related to
travel and tourism was Thomas Cook.
4. Technology development: (Late twentieth century): In present world the technology
enhance so much that people can just see the famous placed on their figure tip and select
places where they want to travel. The use of technology in travel and tourism sector

agencies and public bodies to support tourism activities in the UK. The major aim of this
government department which make sure that Culture, Media & Sport are designed as to attract
visitors in the country (Becken, 2012). The ultimate aim of this department is to design tourism
policy and the funding of tourism promotion.
B. Government Sponsored Bodies: There are different government sponsors at different
countries. In this context, VisitBritain/VisitEngland is a non-departmental public body,
sponsored by UK government to make sure that their heritage and famous places are promoted
among the world.
The major difference in both is of, operations as Department for Culture, Media & Sport
supports tourism activities by designing polices, however, Visit Britain uses different
advertisement tool so that information can be provided to people around the work and they visit
famous places of UK.

tourism sector is UNWTO (World Tourism Organization). The main role of this organization is
