INTRODUCTION Speaking about the travel and tourism industry, it is quite old and is gaining popularityrapidly. Nowadays, most of the people adore travelling and go for holidays abroad. This isbecause of the improvement in the facilities being offered by the tour operators and travelagencies. Further, they are helping people by planning affordable and smooth holiday plans andin turn helped the travel and tourism sector to grow by leaps and bounds contributing a majorchunk to the economy of the nation (Fletcher, Shepherd and Wanhill, 2008). In earlier days,there were not much facilities available as compared to the present date and thus, the share ofthis sector in the economy of the nation is also very less. However, in the current scenario,people love to visit countries such as America and Europe. Pertaining to this, the presentresearch report will focus on the structure of travel and tourism industry of UK. Historicaldevelopments and functions of government bodies of Scotland in promoting this sector will beevaluated effectively. Further, the research report will analyze the growing attractiveness ofEdinburg’s as an ideal destination. The later part of the report will assess the impact of variousfactors on the demand of travel and tourism sector in Edinburg and Scotland as a whole. Theindustry has changed by leaps and bounds and is now became quite organized from thetravellers. Major developments related to the field of technology, services, social conditions andaccommodation facilities have facilitated the growth of this sector. The history of travel andtourism industry varies from time to time (Theobald, 2008). Approximately from the year 1945,there was a time structured with the data was seen in the travel and tourism industry. Peopledesire to spend their time to the varied places that has not been explored by them earlier. Due tochanges in the behavior of human and their expectation from this industry, the tourism industrywas able to keep phase with other industry. Speaking in relation with the starting period, thegrowth of tourism encompasses travelling and transportation of products. However, nowadays italso includes areas which are supplementary to the luxury of the customers. Furthermore, fromthe year 1960 onwards, various factors have been evolved like developing interest of the clientstowards long trips, free time availabilities, growth in the per capita income of people of UK and1

improvement in tour packages offered by the tour operators. By the year1980, several airlinesstarted offering full travel services like making arrangement for holidays, medical services andhiring car and many more. In addition to this, from the year 1990, the tourism industry of UK isimpacted by the development of many new big organizations. Air travel was also improvedrapidly and has contributed greatly in the holiday movement (Fatihah, 2014). 1.2The structure of the travel and tourism sectorThe travel and tourism sector of UK is divided into various sectors as it is a huge industry. Thecategorization is being defined below: Transportation – It is considered as the backbone of sustainable economy, as it helps inbringing people together. Transportation is the most essential factor of tourism whichhelps tourists in reaching the destinations of their choice. This sector encompassesdifferent types of transport such as Airlines, railways, taxis, cruise liners etc. Throwinglight towards the air travel, it majorly includes airlines and airports. The British AirportAuthority (BAA) is the major organization in airport ownership at UK. Other than this,British Airways is the most famous and largest airline in UK (Welcome to Scotland,2018). Accommodation – It is the most vital aspect of travel and tourism. People travelling fromone place to another need home like place to stay. It includes hotels, campus, self-catering, youth hostels, guest accommodation, holiday parks and campsites etc. As perthe BHA (British Hospitality Association), there are around 22000 hotels and guesthouses being registered with the tourist’s boards. In addition to this, approximately 16000bed and breakfasts and more than 1000 of unregistered establishments are present in UK. Travel agents – The role of travel agents is to offer information related to travel to clientsand at the same time they also administer bookings for many tour operators. They arebeing defined as a distributer of products. They give advice on services such a visainformation, ticket sales, travel advice and insurance by targeting different group ofpeople like general public and corporate market (Dickinson and et,al., 2013). 2
