The documentary talks about the disease multiple sclerosis (MS) and its treatment in
Canada. The documentary involves messages from patients and doctors as well as researchers
who have either diagnosed and treated patients or are going through the disabilities associated
with the disease. Medical surgery and treatment occupy a very important position in the field of
this disease. Liberation Treatment involving Angioplasty was recommended by Dr. Paolo
Zamboni whose wife was going through the same disease. He had suggested that the disease in
which the brain is essentially affected due to formation of lesions were surrounded by blood
vessels. He advocated that this happened because of blockage in veins carrying blood to the brain
and suggested angioplasty or liberation treatment to cure patients (ms wars., 2018). However, as
this hypothesis was not tested, it was not implied on the patients of Canada for long and
Angioplasty was considered highly experimental in those days. However, most patients who
resorted to this means of surgery healed and without taking this risk, the other set of patients’
situation kept deteriorating. Most patients who didn’t receive surgery in Canada seeked help
abroad ignoring the consequential death of two patients at Canada (ms wars. 2018). This was
only out of the hope they had to live a better life and it was also easy for them to be connected to
other patients, medical groups and doctors because of the internet. Hope was also instilled in
them by the miraculous videos recorded and uploaded by patients who had recovered. The
treatment had turned out a turf war in between the neurologists who opposed angioplasty and the
vascular surgeons who encouraged this. Out of all the Canadian patients who chose the step of
getting treated through the liberation treatment, two thirds reported significant improvement and
one third reported some improvement as compared to the previous situation. However, a portion
of the population was not cured and still continued experiencing no benefits. This has triggered
enhanced research in this field in Canada.
