UK has experienced an increase in the number of the holidays, reflecting a major growth from the year 2001. In a
survey during 2015, a maximum growth in the number of holidays was experienced reaching up to 13.9 million,
reflecting a 2.1 percent growth in comparison with 2014.
Rise of solo travellers by 150 percent,experienced by the British holidaymakers. Independent travellers between the
age group 35 to 44 years experienced a growth of five to 16 percent. The trend also indicated that the age group of 25
to 75 prefers to travel independently and solo.
From a survey, it has been found that every one in 10 adults in UK own a second home contrasting the figure of four
in every 10 adults with zero property of their own. In UK, the rate of owning holiday homes or multiple properties for
leisure increased by around 30 percent from the year of 2000. A stamp duty was imposed for the second or holiday
home owners in UK, for which the government received around 2 billion pounds of stamp duties in the first quarter of
2017. The stamp duty of 2017 was elevated by 16 percent in the similar quarter of 2016.
Natural Disaster - Hurricane Ophelia in the year 2017 affected the travel and tourism industry in UK. The
Hurricane led to cancellation of modes of transportation. The weather condition affected the booking rates and
service delivery in the industry.
Terrorism - Impact of terror attack was being reflected at the travel and tourism sector. The increasing costs of
transport and food, fear of terrorism and rail problems resulted in the drop of booking and capital. The terrorism
incidences like Finsbury Park attack of 2017 and London Bridge incident of 2019 led to the increasing fear amongst
the travellers in choosing UK as their next destination.
Environmental Concerns - In UK, air pollution is considered to be one of the major concerns followed by declining
coastal habitats and marine life, caused by industrialization, tourism and housing. Plastic pollution causes harm to
the turtles, mussels, dolphins and other habitats. According to the report of Ellen MacArthur Foundation, it is
forecasted that by the year 2050, the water body will experience more plastic than fishes. Food wastage is another
major concern of the country, approximately food of 7.3 million tonnes is thrown away and on the other hand, around
four million individuals are deprived of food.
