Event Brief Overview
Back in 2016, some intruders hacked the data of third parties who were monitoring and handling
the data of Uber drivers. The hackers were able to access a private area on the web-based GitHub
version control repository for developers. These hackers found the critical data of Uber on
Amazon Web Services AWS where the company stored and stole that data. The company also
paid what is called ransom money to those hackers to hide the incident from the public and
currently, it has paid $148 million to settle claims over its data breach issue in 2016. It was data
of around 25 million customers and drivers in America which were vulnerable to those hackers
when they hacked into the third party data banks where Uber drivers’ and customers' data was
stored (Chappel, 2018).
When this incident of a data breach at Uber happened, the company management did not report it
to the law enforcement authorities. Instead of that, the top management tried to cover it up with
its own strategies and paid the hackers $100,000. In 2017 Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi
disclosed to the public that the website was hacked and data of millions of customers and drivers
was stolen. This data consisted of names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers of 57
million Uber users around the world. In addition to that, these figures also included the 600,000
employees of the company whose names and driver's license numbers were also at risk (Chappel,
2018).

Stakeholders
There were several stakeholders of Uber that were affected because of this data breach by the
hackers in America. These key stakeholders that were somehow involved or affected by this
issue of trust and data breach were Uber users, drivers, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and
investors (Kelly, 2018).
Uber
Uber was the first and foremost stakeholder that was involved as well as affected by this incident
that not only affected its data but also the trust that the company has built over the years among
its potential users including customers and drivers. The major issue was covering up the incident
instead of reporting it to the law enforcement authorities. It will be difficult for most of the
customers in the coming years to trust the level of security that customers will feel when they
share their data with Uber (Kanter, 2015).
Users/Passengers
Users were highly vulnerable to the incident of data breach in 2016 and chances are the same can
happen again. The phone numbers, address names and other critical information of users were in
the hands of those hackers which could have been misused. The stakeholders of Uber were in a
highly risky position during this data breach.
Drivers
The second most critical stakeholders of Uber were drivers who lost the information of their
names, phone numbers, driving licenses and bank account numbers to those hackers. It was a
complete one year that Uber kept the incident to itself instead of sharing it with the public,
