INTRODUCTION
The UK legal system is unique and complex. The wide range of legislation framework aims to
secure the rights of the individual. Law is defined as the set of rules and regulations that are

important for the smooth functioning of the country. Law is further categorised into public law and
private law. These laws play pivotal role in establishing relation between the government and the
individual. The private law identifies as an important legislation that creates harmony among the
individual and binds them with certain rights and responsibilities. The law of contract, tort and
employment law are some of the important legislations that comes under the purview of the private
law. Whereas public law secures the right of the public at large such as criminal law of England and
Wales, Administrative law, Tax law etc. This report will analyse the classification of laws and its
impact on commercial organisation. Further, it will cover the various sources of law that contributes
to the growth of the English legal system.
1.0The UK Classifications of Laws
(i) Provide a clear definition of law within UK Context.
Answer 1 (i) In general sense, law is defined as the set of rules and legislation that monitors and
govern the activities of the society (Al-Astewani, 2019). It is quite difficult to define exact meaning
of the term “Law”. Many jurists have given the different meaning to the law and interpretate in the
strict sense. According to Salmond, a famous jurist has defined it as, “Law is a body of principles
that are recognised and used for the administration of justice in a country”. A legislation which is
enacted by the Parliament is used to implement the framework in a country and executive are
responsible for enforcing such laws. It influences the behaviour of an individual and balance the
social and economic policies of the country. The UK common law is based on the principle of
natural justice which is one of the legal principles of law of equity. It provides fair, just, and
reasonable justice system in a country. UK has an independent judiciary body that provides
effective mechanism to promote the general interest of the citizens. The two House of parliament
give consent to the Bill that are made to raise the certain topic of the society that requires attention
of the law-making body to legally formed the legislation to bring peace and harmony among the
people.
(ii) Define and discuss the characteristics of the two main classifications of laws in UK.
Answer 1 (ii) Laws are classified based on their nature, purpose and procedure that are evolved
through different sources of law. The two main classification of law in UK are discussed below:
Civil Law: It is a part of Private law which deals with the right of the individuals. It
mainly covers the areas that deals with the law of tort, family laws, employment laws and land
related matters. It binds the legal obligation on the parties and complies them with certain terms and
condition that are enforceable against each other. The civil liability is raised on the party who fails
to legally comply with the terms of the contract (Haines, 2018). The party can either claim for
compensation or damages for the violation of their right arises through contractual agreement
between the parties.
Criminal Law: This classification of law affects the society at large. The government are
responsible for enforcing the criminal legal system in the society to reduce the crime rate in the
